I'll add to this. I have an interview this week. If i get the role, one of the options for location is Swansea. Would anyone like to fill me in on good areas for riding/livery within a 10 mile radius? I have one horse who thrives on 24/7 turnout for most of the year. And we do endurance, so a school is a lower priority than excellent out-riding.

Any thoughts on suitable locations to live and livery would be gratefully received :)

It depends which bit of Swansea you end up living in!
If you live over the Gower side then there's loads of amazing riding round there - look up Tankey Lake livery yard. Lots of hills for hill work, sandy soil so mud's never a problem, and you can ride onto the beach (Llangennith, 3 miles long) with no road work at all.

I live outside Swansea (Ammanford) as you get a lot more for your money but it does take me between 30 minutes - 1 hour to commute 16 miles; the road system is awful and there are lots of bad drivers. If you're going to live outside Swansea then you'd best off looking around Glanamman/Garnant as yards up there have direct riding onto the Brecon Beacons. There's not much off-road riding round here so choose your yard v carefully if that's a priority.

To hijack this slightly, does anyone know where I can get oat straw? Tried all the usual feed shops and FB groups and have had no luck, apart from having Honeychop suggested which I'm not overly keen on as it will end up costing me a fortune.

If you wanted to go to the eastern side of Swansea (it makes it a little easier to get back to England if that's where you're from) there's good riding around the Margam (Port Talbot) area in the forestry. I often box my horse there from Cardiff for a nice day out. Not too sure about livery yards, but it's a pretty horsey area so worth a look. It's about 7-8 miles from Swasnea but the journey in can be congested and could well take 45 minutes.

The Gower is beautiful, but to get pretty much anywhere else, you have to go through Swansea which can take up to an hour. I think it's probably why the Gower has stayed as beautiful and as unpopulated as it is!
