Anyone on here on a yard where nobody turns out in the rain??

The yard I am on seems to not turn out in the rain-YO is happy for them to go out but he doesnt turn out as he doesnt like them getting wet.
Being one of the only liveries on the yard (except another lady who also doesnt turn out in the rain) it means my boy is out alone.

Anyone else on a yard where the horses dont go out in the rain?? My boy was out in the snow & everything as he isnt particulary happy stabled so I like to turnout whenever possible, just not sure being out alone will make him any happier.

Fields are not muddy or wet, just they dont like to turnout in the rain!
 
We have one livery who doesn't turn her 4 out if it's raining/snowing/windy/too hot/too cold...you get the drift? So they pretty much spend 24/7 in the stable BUT then she gets stroppy if she can't use the indoor school for turnout because shock horror other livieries are RIDING in there!!!:rolleyes:

She told me once I was cruel because my cobs are out 24/7 and they are only rugged when it's very very cold. Obviously I ignore her opinion as it's worthless.
 
Ours go out in all weather. They are only out for a few hours each day, as the fields aren't the best but it's better then nothing. We do have a livery who hasn't turned out since Nov cos it's too 'wet'... I think if a YO won't let liveries turn out in the rain, most of them will do it so the fields don't get churned up if anything. I'd keep turning your horse out at every opportunity :)
 
If the YO is happy to turn out mine would be out.

Our YO wants them in today, which Lacey is equally happy about because although she likes being out eating grass she also like being in when it's raining because she's a bit of a diva like that! :rolleyes:

I always feel like I am being watched when I turnout but never mind!!
 
haha, we have a new livery whose loaning her first horse (a cob X) and bless her, we had to convince her that the thing wouldnt get cold in the rain. Her mother is totally unhorsey and literally drops her daughter off and sits in the car so the kids doing it all herself. To be fair though she is very savvy and asks all the right questions.

All mine go out in all weather, but captain has to have his heavyweight rug.

I hate kids, but I met one at a yard who I still like to this day, she was bold as brass but she would be told as well - great mix :D

What with the snow & everything most the horses havent been out for nearly a month-that would drive my little man insane!!

Well this girl is doing her GCSEs and is a really good rider with totally no interest in competing, pity really as i think if she found a horse that suited her she would do well. Shes a lovely person, helpful as they come and she isnt a know it all which is nice. i know so many young girls who think that sitting on a horse = riding and therefore they know it all and feel the need to tell you all day long.

weve got another school age girl with us and they are both fab to have around.
 
Blimey are there really people like that?...they are horses they survive..lol

Although, my old lad hated being out in torrential rain so would be kept in, but no usually he would be out in it....unless YO shut field off due to being too wet or getting too churned up.

I like horses to be out for as long as possible, 1) cos it's far better for them and 2) saves on extra hay and mucking out..lol
 
I used to be at a yard like that and I hated it. Although the rules there were; no horses allowed out if it's raining, foggy, snowy, icey etc. If it rained you also weren't allowed to turn your horse out for about a week afterwards because they like to give the ground a chance to dry. I was told by liveries who had been there a long time that you'd be lucky for your horse to go out twice throughout the whole of Autumn and winter!! How ridiculous is that!! I quickly moved.
 
Yep, our yard is like that. At the moment its raining, the fields are waterlogged, no grass out there, and my boy is quite happily standing in his stable munching on his hay and playing with his snak ball. And at least if we are not out at the mo the fields will recover better and have good turnout all through spring/summer/autumn.
 
My old boy is out come rain or shine (as are all the other liveries) i was told when i got my horse that he was stabled overnight in winter and if the weather is horrid. He HATES being stabled! Yesterday it was pelting down when i went to feed so thought i'd take him into the barn. But he threw a strop and wanted to stand out in the rain! He does have to go out in a heavyweight though as the poor chap feels the cold and has next to no winter coat!
 
Usually turnout no matter what - so long as it is safe (no skating rinks!), but they are in today. The fields are really suffering so just trying not to trash them. The yard could really do with more land, but it is fab in other ways so we stick here. In fairness this is only about the 2nd day they have had in all autumn and winter. Not too bad!
 
I couldn't put my horse out today as no other liveries wanted to turn out and he won't be on his own. Silly.

That is the dilemma I had-but thought sod it & chucked him out, I cant just not turnout because everyone isnt. I cant be doing with spending more money on bedding than what is needed (and mine is a messy bugger lol!!)
 
I think horses should be turned out every day whatever the weather, but not in muddy or slippery fields. We have an arena for riding and a sand menage for all weather turnout that is only 5 metres away from the stables. The horses get haylage nets in the turnout area (enough so they are not hungry but not so much as they never move from them to get their exercise!). No mud fever, happy, clean and relaxed horses. I'm afraid I will not turn out on the grass in the winter as we are on heavy clay and it would soon turn into a mud bath as well as being very dangerous for the horses.

From November to March our horses go out in a very large old sand school during the day with plenty of hay. They haven't been in a single day, even in the snow/ice a path was cleared to the turnout so they could go out, the horses seem very relaxed and chilled with the arrangement.
 
We haven't turned out today but purely because the fields have hardly any grass and were sodden before all the rain, plus one of the horses fell over yesterday having a hoon so we want to be extra careful :rolleyes: Ordinarily they go out rain,wind or shine :D
 
I couldn't do without a sand turnout. I never had one before but if I ever moved, I would ensure that I had one built in addition to a riding arena. It is so much safer for the horses and the grass is rubbish during the winter so I don't think they miss out on anything. We don't get the problem of horses crowding the gate to come in because they are hungry and cold like they do at other yards. I would go as far as to say it is a horsey essential.
 
The YO at our place doesn't like us turning out in the rain from what I can gather (only been there a couple of months) but frustrated as its now stopped pelting down with rain and my girl is stuck in eating the fab haylage he supplies and getting fat. Can understand that he wants to stop the fields getting trashed but it only rained overnight. Having said that he was great in all the snow when I and one of the other liveries asked if we could leave ours out 24/7 cos they're both cobs and prone to putting on weight. So got them out on the first day of snow when it was powdery enough to walk on, and all the others were stuck in for nearly a week and a half. AND YO was great - put a bale of haylage out for them (which they ignored) and broke the ice on their trough every day. Swings and roundabouts I guess! :)
 
Hmm this is my only bug bear at my new yard. I was pretty specific when I moved that I wanted daily turn out. And YO was fine. Apparantly however she is on a different wavelength! Her horses live in all winter. They dont go out at all. And she seems to think that ours will melt also if its a bit murky! She will say she 'assumed' I would want him in despite me mentioning at every opportunity that I want him out as much as possible! Unless its particularly treachurous or absolutley slinging it down and forecast for the day I want him out!
Needless to say I imagine he will have been kept in today which annoys me as he will be in tomorrow too as there is a shoot on the farm. :mad:
She doesn't really give a reason for them not going out. Fields are high up and sloping and dont suffer too much with mud, and it must cost her much less to have them out as they are not scoffing their heads off with haylage or using up more bedding - as these are included ad lib in livery.
 
Everything I own that can live out does, so is out in all weathers. Ideally I'd like a stable for each of them so they could come in for a few hours a day to dry out/warm up if the weather is awful, but in the absence of that, good rugs seem to do! The advantage of having more than one is also that even on livery yards, so long as turnout was permitted, they always had each other for company. Now I've got my own place I can do what I want, when I want :D.

The possibilty of sand colic would concern me though if given hay in there.
 
We used to be at a yard like that. Our horses went out every day whatever the weather but you could feel the eyes on the back of your head as we led them out. Not that it bothered me, my horses welfare comes first.
 
I've been on yards like this. People don't give horses enough credit - the majority prefer to be out and they also don't need to be rugged to the eyeballs. I sometimes wonder whether I'm considered 'the bad mum'on my yard as my part arab has only been in a medium weight (with neck) all winter and goes out everyday in all weather (unless it's a full on gale) and is ever so happy.
 
What, in England... that would be absolute madness - crikey, I have heard it all now...

Mine go out 12 hours a day whatever the weather. My girl cut herself on her hind and fore a week ago (and she was wearing boots all round!!) - I cleaned it up and shoved her back out the next day - better off walking round on it in my opinion. Of course, there are some out there that would have racked up an emergency vet call out for less and put on box rest for a week but as far as I am concerned ... fresh air all the way please.
