Anyone paint poles/jumps?

Sorry if this has already been done. I want to paint some wooden poles and metal oil drums to make them into jumps but I'm not sure where to start. I think you need an undercoat/primer then a top coat. Has anyone done this and could you give me some tips. Thank you x

I have just done mine

If this is the first paint they will have you need a suitable primer, then I just use any undercoat and top coat.

They will last longer if you use external gloss on the top.

Definitely use a primer and if you use and acrylic based eggshell as a top coat it dries very quickly and, as it's water based, the brushes just need cleaning with water. So much easier than oil based paint!
