just interested to know if anyone has re-homed from them - how is it going for you???
i may [ just may:D] be going to visit them over the easter hols - was hoping to look at some horses at Darley re-homing too , but sadly at 12 stone i am too heavy:(
am looking for a non-spindly type to do low level dressage on

I approached them a few yrs ago interested in rehoming a lovely horse id seen on their website, i called, left messages and emailed ...... Never heard a thing :(
I then went on to buy a lovely wee tb and about 6 months later got an email asking if i was still interested in the horse id approached them about.
A shame really as it couldve been a really good experienced home with a BHS qualified groom

Hi,

I haven't personally rehomed a racehorse from HEROS (my new boy is coming from his racing owner) but I have had friends who have succesfully rehomed horse (s) from them and I have contacted them previously when looking into rehoming from a charity.

I've always found them to be really helpful, they do a great job to ensure these brilliant creatures go on to lead a happy and fulfilling life and they carry out checks to make sure owners are coping. They try to match a horse to a rider taking into account both temperment and potential as well as the riders experience etc which is not always possible when horses are bought at sales or straight from training.

I was told I would only be shown horses who would match my experience and riding level (I've spent more times on gallops than in a school)....sounded harsh at the time but Im sure it would have prevented me falling in love with something entirely unsuitable over a stable door that had potential I couldn't fulfill.

They also allow potential owners to try horses multiple times if necessary to make sure. I was lucky enough to try my boy a few times so atleast I have an idea of what I will be dealing with when he arrives but I can imagine this gives piece of mind.

For me HEROS get the thumbs up....long may they continue.

Em

PS: Well done for considering rehoming a racehorse!!

There's a LOVELY LOVELY LOVELY horse from there on our yard. Only problem is the person to whom he has been rehomed is a fairly unbalanced novice. All he wants to do is hack, & horse is great with him but owner too novice to cope with a "problem" when out on his own so he's had a nasty fall, lost his nerve & horse been scared. Fortunatley there are people on hand to pick up the pieces but really the man's too novice to hack alone, let alone on a racehorse, however lovely it is.
Really hope you manage to find a new best friend :)
PS Don't forget to check that the horse has had it's teeth checked in the last 6 months ;);)

I've just rehomed a horse from Darleys and not once did they ask me how much I weighed. Don't have any experience with heroes but have only heard good things about them from other people. Good luck and let us know how you get on!

Mines from heroes. Had her just over 6 yrs and criteria wasn't quite so strict back then as it appears now which can only be a good thing. Two friends bought horses from there based on my luck, one didn't work out and the other one had a career ruining kick a few years ago but has had one lovely foal and is due again in a few weeks.

The only issue I have heard with HEROS is that they insist you insure with KBIS, and that you never really have ownership of the horse. At least with the Darley scheme, the horse is yours but you have the option to return to them if your circumstances change.

Heroes is mainly loaning but the 'North Farm stud' side of the business is mainly horses for sale. I haven't heard the insurance stipulation but then I got mine 6 yrs ago. I know you have to have them freezemarked with the prefix 'H' though.

why on earth would 12st be considered too heavy:confused: i was looking into my TB's one and only race details (pushing the trade descriptions act to call him an exracer i think lol) and his jockey weight was 11st something! to limit it to 12 seems ridiculous:confused:

Yeah I agree, it seems ridiculous - who was it who told you about this weight restriction OP?

the person who answwered the phone at darley told me - so i assume that this is the case - if i have been mis-informed will happily be corrected - they had some very nice horses:)

i personally haven't had a horse off them but was looking into one of their horses they have for loan, however, when i spoken to them on the phone the woman said that you pay £1500 minimum donation even if you're loaning. has anyone else had this too? the horse was definitely for loan.
