Well I think I have finally worked out what was causing the bumps. Jerry came in on Saturday covered in them again, I hadn't changed his feed this time so the only thing i could think of was the heat (it was much warmer) so took a layer off, and turned him out that evening with a thinner rug on, and by the time he came in on Sunday the bumps had all gone, put hi stable rug on for a few hours before going showjumping, but when I took it off the bumps were all back!

Turned him out last night in the same as the night before, and he came in with no bumps again, I have now left him in a fleece and a lightweight stable rug, hopefully that will do the trick. But it is still quite cold and I am worried he wont be warm enough! He is fully clipped.

Has anyone had this problem? Would be really interested to hear your experiences if you have, and how you managed it,

Thanks

Interesting! I remember a mare that I used to look after many moons ago. She lived only in a thin NZ which had a plastic lining ( well just a normal NZ). She was a Hanno Dressage mare and she lived in this NZ all year round, even when she was in the stable at night.
She did come up in lumps with any other rug on hence she never wore a 'normal' rug. Her coat was always really dandruffy and she was forever itching herself. She had some sort of skin allergy there.

Somone on my yard is having the same thing with her horse...came in Friday night looking like he had chicken pox - spoke to the vet who just said to put a thinner rug on and see what happens...surely enough by Sat/Sun the lumps had all gone down. We're a bit confused about what caused it aswell but doesnt appear to be a big problem...also was wondering whether extra salt could be an issue as they appeared the morning after having electrolytes in evening feed????

Yes I remember your posts, I too have had a similar problem with bumps just assumed it was a reaction to his food, and cut down the molasses, he then was clipped and his lumps disappeared, I have seen them again only the odd one or two this weekend and I have not changed his feed or routine, so could be that he was getting hot underneath his HW rug in what has been a lovely warm weekend.

This morning I have only put a MW on so hopefully the lumps will have gone and he will feel more comfortable.

I do think it is heat related and just like us they get heat bumps.

Oh!! we had this same problem with our mare Millie, she was full of lumps the other year, had the vet out and the lot. I cannot remember how I found out that she was too hot but what I do know that for the last few years we keep her in lighter rugs and she is fine but if she ever does get too warm she goes lumpy again.

Oh, just remembered, the owner of this Hanno mare was constantly washing the rugs , so she always had clean rugs on.. but that was probably more due to her excessive dandruff than anything else.
If J starts to become dandruffy as well, then drop me a line and I'll get in touch with the owner of this mare. I saw the owner again two years ago and she said that she had now managed to completely eradicate the problem..cant remember how she did it though..

My warmblood goes all lumpy when hes too warm too, also had to reduce rugs even though hes fully clipped and its cold. Friend rode him for me one night and thought she was doing right because it was cold put 3 rugs on. should have seen him in the morning!!

This week hes just been lumpy in the saddle cloth area. Started washing off with warm water and tea tree shampoo seams to help, now hes swaeting a bit during work i've started washing his saddle cloths each time.

Big softy.

Yes I am also having this at the moment ahh!!! I dropped his stable rugs and all was fine for a couple of weeks but then after riding yesterday some bumps came back up in the saddle cloth area. Bring on summer then it will hopefuly just be dealing with sunburn silly pink pony...

hi all just read this with great interest as my pony has the same thing i guess it may be a heat rash wasnt sure if the midges were going under rug and biting her, shes fully clipped but even after going from hw to mw theve improved but stil not completely gone thanks all

My mare has had lumps all over her body for two weeks. The interesting thing is she also had them last January so it's odd really. No change in feed, or routine or washing powder and I know it went warmer but I'm not convinced heat is causing them although I do think heat makes them worse?! She's been quite sensitive to touch and just a bit unhappy in herself. She's been on antistamines now for over a week and tonight they have almost gone.

Ive had problems wiht a lumpy horse now since October.
I cut his feed out one by one untill he was just having apples for breakfast and tea, still no change, i changed him over to hayledge after suspecting it was the hay and haypresto, a week later they have all gone

I didn't see your previous posts, otherwise would have answered before. I've have known quite a few horses to overheat and come out with heat lumps. We have two on our yard at the moment.

I'm always getting comments about under rugging my mare, but I prefer her to be a bit under rugged than over - she can always move around her box to keep warm, if they are too warm, what can they do!

The lumps can of course be caused by an allergy from something, but I do think this time of year, it tends to be heat rash.

What size/look are the lumps and bumps? My boy has been coming in over the past week with bumps that look like small bites, about the size of a 2p coin over his shoulders and saddle area (maybe a dozen of them). I was a bit puzzled over what was eating him, but it could certainly be heat as he's still turned out in a HW.

Out of interest, what antihistamines are you using Tiffany?

Thx

Lumps range from tiny to pea size but they were all over her body, including her face. Bless her she was so sensitive. I'll try and get name of them but because she's finished them I might not have boxes left. Another vet's been up today for her annual vaccine and he said he suspects it's an environmental allergy?! He said if she only gets them in Jan it would be better to start her on antihistamines in December.
Managed to give her a good brush today, first one for two weeks, she loved it!

Thats how my boys started, like small peas under skin then they seem to spread out and become little doughnut shapes, he had them on his face as well but the ones on his face weeped.
He had antihistermines bute antibiotics creams you name it, its taken four months to find out what he was allergic to, at first we tought it was a fungi infection.
We cut out his feed one by one and then changed his hay supplier, the lumps got worse again so then put him on hayledge and a week later they all cleared up.
We thought it was somthing in the field or the environment, the next step wouldve have been to move him to a different yard, thank god it didnt come to that.

yes quite a few of the horses on our yard have a few bumps (i can think of atleast 4) our YM says they are heat bumps. my pony had about 5 little pea sized bumps last night, but i cant drop her rugs as she will be cold. they are around the saddle area so i presume they are heat from work - i work her with an exercise sheet on as otherwise she tucks up for a while - maybe i shouldnt be as maybe this is when she is overheating.
