Anyone riding out today? Not ridden in snow before too deep?

I've never ridden in the snow before as always had to ride across long roads to get off road, now being next to a beautiful forest I quite fancy it.

We have some 4inches (I measured it on the ground) is this too deep to ride on with Vaseline in the feet?

I had my first ever hack out un the snow last week. It wasn't very deep and both horses are barefoot. The only place they had problems was on a downhill section on grass where their back feet were slipping a bit. It was very beautiful so if you can go out safely then do. The horses loved it once the sloppy part was past. :)
 
Our 'snow' is too sticky to ride in with shod feet - it was balling in their feet badly whilst they were turned out for a couple of hours this morning, so wouldn't risk it.

Have tried vaseline but find it only works short term - any other ideas?
 
Try it and see, you can always go home :)
We ride in knee deep snow, the horses have fun. Just go where you know what is underfoot. 4" is nothing honestly. Enjoy.
 
Up to it shoulder deep almost earlier!

Long as you know your route well and are sensible, you'll be fine! Even had some lovely canters earlier.
 
I take shoes off every winter as we're bound to get snow and ice up here!
I hack as usual (unless its too icy/hard and rutty)
Went for some cracking gallops in the stubble fields on thursday (we,ve had snow all week)
If its cold and dry enough the snow won't ball - it only balls when its soggy snow
