these pics are of a horse that has had 'ROTTEN FROGS' (fettone marcio) for the last 5 years. Poster has had vet and blacksmith look at it and seemingly no one is able to tell her what it is or how to cure it

. She rides the horse 6 days a week and says that it is sound before during and after work. What do you think it is and how would you treat it? WB,

Yes, that looks like a bad case of Sheared Heels, my horse has this, although no where near that bad. Mine has it in 3 out of 4 feet and the blacksmith says that it is very common and to do with how the horse places his feet. He showed me how to take a strip of towel to wedge in the split and run up an down a little to clean the gap - it smells really bad! And a bit of vet spray. He thought my horse would be helped in heart bar shoes, but it causes him no ill effects either.

thankyou all for your replies. I have never had the dubious pleasure of seeing 'sheared heels' and am pleased that you have given it a name. Am now off to google SH and then pass on the info to the owner.

I wouldn't call that rotten frogs, I'd call it contracted heels. The owner of that horse needs to get a new farrier, or better still, let the horse go barefoot and the heels open out.
