As above really, going on Friday with my 3 yr old tb who has a bad eye injury, wondered if it was easy to find, any experiences - especially eye related ones?

Its quite a long way so am worrying about it already!!

Thanks for any advice x

pretty easy to find - but there isn't much notice of the turning. Search for Damhead Lane on google maps and you'll see the Leahurst complex to the left of it.

Will you be seeing Derek Knottenbelt? First time we saw him, I didn't take to him, but after that he was lovely (think stress must have got the better of me!). He is endlessly patient and doesn't get fazed by over-wrought women dissolving in floods of tears over him! :o

Good luck - he will be in good hands. Let us know how it goes. <<hugs>>

you will be in good hands --

very professional and friendly

just remember your passport and insurance ref number(if claiming)

when you arrive go striaght to the reception with your details they'll need all this first

don't worry its easy to find --which direction are you coming from north or south
if M6 we take J20 and its pretty striaght forward from there
if you go onto their website they have the directions for you to find them
link below if this helps--GOOD LUCK

Have been a few times with horses and it is pretty easy to find, just need to make sure you go to reception before you do anything with your horse. You leave them on the box until they come over as far as I remember.

Experts! So tell me how they confuse aborting a foal (3 days before mare's due date) and twisted gut when the owner (me - says she's seen the foal moving!) My mare presented with sudden onset of violence - throwing herself at walls and floor, my local vet comes, diagnosis, grade 3 colic refers to leahurst. Got there and they did all the same tests again as my own vet, and come scratching their heads saying they think she's aborting and want to put her in a stable to see what develops. (All this faffing took another 2 hours) I demand she's taken to theatre - now, I informed them the mare is my priority but if they can save the foal could they. They wanted to leave the foal inside after colic surgery, not a chance says I - she can't go through labour so soon after abdominal surgery, the foal has to come out! Her colon had a 360 degree torsion and ruptured. I lost my mare, the filly foal died 3 days later - on her due day. So no, I'd never go to leahurst if it was last place on earth. I will say this for them, it is easy to find and the staff were polite and helpful, they sent me a book of poems and my husband had requested some mane from my mare as a keepsake for me, i got some mane and tail, beautifully plaited with pink ribbon on the ends. They're probably great with everything else, just not heavily pregnant mares with colic and I am just a tad bitter and resentful.

Yes I took my wobblers horse there in 2004 but I believe its been modernised since then. Its a centre of excellence, and some of the best veterinary consultants in the country work there. I'm sure you will be in safe hands. Someone suggested I email Derek Knottenbelt about a possible eye problem I had with my current horse and he replied within half an hour, I was gobsmacked! Very decent and knowledgable chap by all accounts.

Unfortunatley as my wobblers boy was so ataxic we chose a horsebox firm to take him there and it was a long journey of approx 3 hours. In my horses case the trip was one way I'm afraid, but my best friends horse was fixed there with his colic and someone i know's horse is there at the moment recovering from a colic operation so they are very good.

Please don't worry and put your horse in their hands. Good luck xx

Yep been and found them very good and helpful. It is easy to find with satnav and it's signposted too. I did the journey (both ways) with my boy and it was almost 4 hours (Newcastle to Leahurst). Again check into reception first with your docs and then they'll assist you from there. They were great on the collection visit as they helped me do ramps etc as I was on my own and being a typical emotional wreck owner :o They also explain everything and call you when they say they will with updates. Don't bother taking any rugs or headcollars etc to leave unless request to do so as they provide everything.

Would also advise checking the bill when you get it even if its on insurance as they called my horse in early and ended up doing the op late and I got the charge for additional stabling as it then went over the insurance cover for stabling.

Great,, really sympathetic and made information comprehensive but you can feel a bit lost at first with so many people hustling around! Dealt with my horse; ataxic and meningitis, extremely well. And also were very sympthtic when he had to be pts. GOOD LUCK!

I took my mare there in 1998 thinking it would be a one-way journey TBH. She was fine when I went up to see to her this morning! We were lucky enough to be attended to by Derek Knottenbelt himself who was absolute kindness and encouragement personified - I was a bit "tired and emotional" not least because my horse doesn't box and had to be heavily sedated just to get her on board, and then woke up and smashed up the inside of the box all the way there and arrived completely black and dripping with sweat. I still email him to give him a report about her every 6 months or so and always get a lovely and funny reply from him. He has also helped solve a problem or two in the meantime by consulting with his colleagues who specialise in other problems. I think the facilities have changed alot now, but I was allowed to visit her every day and spend as much time as I liked as long as I rang the duty vet to say I was coming over (it was after work and took an hour to drive there so after dark). Don't forget to take your insurance documents with you!

Thanks for all the replies, am feeling more confident about it all now, I've spoken with them on the phone and know what she's having when she gets there too as I wasnt sure before, and we're seeing Fernando?? One of the vets at my localpractice said he is very very good so pleased about that.

thanks again x
