I had an interesting chat with hubby this morning. Apparently IF I want a lorry, the only chance I have is to have a cattle wagon that can be used for both the horses (with partitions) and for the cows (partitions removed).

Now, I told him to take a running jump....but have noticed alot of cattle wagons on the road today that had "HORSES" graphics on the cabs.

Can you put adjustable partitions in that can be removed for towing livestock? I'm not sure I would like to share a lorry with cows, but beggars can't be choosers sometimes!

I know someone who does quite successfully. They partition off the back half of the lorry and use for two hunters. Works quite well, gives a steady ride, but the ramp's quite steep.

My friend used to have an Iveco lorry and I must admit the ramp on that was much, much steeper than the transporter's ramp is who we pay to move some youngstock for us. That certainly would be a consideration though Katy.

If we bought one, we'd be able to pay through the farm as it'd be classed as a livestock wagon primarily.

friend at old yard had one and have seen a few around. don't know about the partitions though, would he not let you get a nice small one just for horses, say if you cashed in those shares and made him a very very nice meal with all the extras for afters...........................

I see loads around here used for both. Never heard of anyone having any trouble and yes, they have removable partitions. The ramps are rarely matted so can be a bit noisy but I guess they get used to it. I got a lift back in one with my mare last winter when she lost a shoe hunting and it certainly didn't worry her.

One of my daughter's trainers has a sheep wagon that doubles as a horse lorry. I believe it's even got the extra floor that is put in when needed for lots of sheep. It's not very pretty but it does the job reliably and that is of course the most important thing!

I'd say go for cattlewagon / horsebox combo - but then my lorry is "free form" inside and all the partitions and "kitchen" and loo can come out so it's one big empty space, or I can travel five horses, properly partitioned, or three horses and the carriage, or a couple of horses and a pony and have a big "living". Loads of options! Not the most beautiful lorry in the park but probably the most practical.

Well I'm trying to persuade son that his motorbikes can easily make room for my horses in his wagon! It seems daft to have a 505 sitting around all year doing very little when for a bit of conversion I could use this! - It'll need a side ramp and partitions but that should be easy enough - she says jokingly!

Well yes, something like that.....although not quite so posh!

Can you take all the partitions out? What are the chances of cows standing on the tracks they fit into and damaging them?

no tracks on the floor..just "pee holes"......these also second up as well..... peeholes!!!! the partition stalk just slots down into the floor of the lorry.......

as for the ramps...as ours is used for commercial use, the ramp angle and step up at the top of ramp is very low, as stated by DEFRA.

All partitions, even the full length solid "mare and foal" partition, are aluminium..and can be removed and replaced by one person...
