Both me and my parents have Ranger Thunders. My dad tows his 21ft caravan with his with no problem at all.He said it tows better than his ford explorer 4ltr V6.His is a 56 plate with has the 137bhp where's ours is the 54 plate and has less bhp at 109.But it still has 10 more bhp than my Landy defender.Have yet to tow horses with our but should not be a problem.Lovely cars though!.
I tow with my husbands Ford Ranger single cab pick up. Its a 2.5 diesel 4 x 4 but not turbo and quite old. Its bloody awful, completely gutless, bumpy and uncomfortable - however its a perfect workhorse for his job (which doesn't include towing!) and I can't wait to get my own towing car.
Yes, apparently the older models were rather underpowered. I think Ford has made an effort there to improve the performance. However, it's still lighter then a old Disco, so probably not quite as stable.
I did try a quick test in a new 3litre double cab version which a nearby garage had on their hands, but without a trailer, so no real test. It was very comfortable/easy to drive & had loads of power (maybe too much on a wet road?), but I got the impression the rear end was a bit lively on it's suspension.
The other possibilty is a Defender, but I'm rather put off by the miserably small rear door and cramped driving position.... OK it's built like a tank and would out last anything else !
I tow with a newish Ranger - I am afraid I don't know anything about the spec (its my sisters car) but its the 5 seater version with lots of chrome bits and the full cab on the back. Its fab to tow with - never feel like like the trailer (ifor 505 with 2 in it) is dictating the pace. Does not loose power up hills and weighty enough to not be pushed down the other side!
Its about £65 to fill up - we did about 175 miles last week which used up a whole tank.

We're officially resident in Switzerland, so have to buy the vehicle there SSM.
I would hate to have to do some of things we do to a brand new Disco Mk.3. a) it's too expensive now and b) they've got too twee to be a useful utility do-anything tow vehicle. The idea of a pickup truck appeals to me because we can throw dirty fenceposts and stuffed haynets in the back without getting the interior of the car covered !
