just wondering really, last summer I spent an awful lot of money on various creams and fly sprays that either didn't work, or worked for a very short period before the flies started irritating my mare again.
I have heard some good things about Global Herbs's Skratch/ Skratch plus, which sounds good for horses that become itchy, and I know they also manufacture a supplement called Flyfree; I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this and whether it worked? currently horse gets fed garlic all year round, slightly more in summer.
I am not sure if the flies are invinsible in my area (Buckinghamshire) and we seem to have a lot of midges and horseflies. I have tried many different fly sprays, but if you have found any that really do seem to work, please share them here! I watched the thread about own fly sprays and remedies closely but sadly haven't found a combination that works :(
I have heard that putting 1 gallon apple cider vinegar to 5 gallons water makes the blood less appealing to flies, but I don't know if this is proven or just an old wives tale.
I would just like to find out any possibilities before we hit the fly season!

Get some Flypor our vet says nothing works except for this. Its a drench just be aware it does burn so be careful not on sensitive areas or where they can lick etc. Wear gloves. You can buy it on line but our vet sold us a small decanted bottle for about £14. It did work(we had a mare with patches from being nibbled and had tried DEET and Naff etc.
 
I've a horse with cushings (compromised immune system)that gets a really bad reaction to fly bites. He's got worse as he's got older and I've tried most things. Athough he wears a good fly rug, he still gets bitten then he rubs himself raw. He's also got v sensitive skin. Would Flypor be OK to use? I've go Neem Oil to try but would welcome any suggestions. Got the poor old boy in today and noticed the midges are out in force!!
 
I use Skratch plus/Superskratch, it's AMAZING (if you can get your horse to eat it!!).

My mane-less appy had a tail consisting of roughly a dozen hairs last yr, but this week I actually trimmed it for the first time in 3yrs. I must admit, I do mix a few spoons with hot water and use it when cooled as a fly spray. Don't do that if you have a grey - it stains their coat.

Check with a vet re sensitive skin but if its broken I would say NO it does burn bare skin. BUT the mare we put it on had mild cushings. Its more the problem that you musnt put it anywhere sensitive. Farmers drench withers and along cattles backs with the stuff. We were very mean with it ie dabbed it on with a bit of gauze (we didnt drench). We put it around their butts and where we knew they wouldnt reach to scratch(even with bendy horses). I would use it.
