does anyone use bedmax. I am thinking of going to bedmax next winter and rubber mats as other on yard use it and looks nice but they just use banks and tiny sprinkling in middle. I think my mare will get dirty and smelly as she likes to lay in her bed and poo anywhere. she is currently on straw but does eat a little.

I've used it, I like it, but it is too expensive with six horses on it. I have reverted to straw. You can get some good offers on bedmax if you buy in bulk though.

Yes I use it; have used other bedding in the past, i.e. cheap & cheerful as opposed to brand name.

I like Bedmax. Its good value for money IMO and does seem not to get as soiled as say sawdust. The stable smells nice and fresh and it doesn't hold the moisture so much as sawdust for instance and/or get heavy and clingey.

It is described as being "specially for horses". Presumably because it is low on dust. That's not a problem for either of my Neds but I have found it lasts considerably longer than other bedding and I don't seem to have to be replacing it quite so often.

I used to use Miscanthus/Elephant Grass; particulaly liked the one with Citronella in it. But my loan mare decided she liked to eat it, so that's why I changed really.

Whilst I like the Bedmax, that doesn't mean to say that I wouldn't buy/use other non-branded bedding which is similar in consistency. If it was cheaper, I'd buy it basically.

I like it! I don't have rubber matting so I have a big fluffy shavings bed of it. Smells so lovely when you open a bag.

I used to hate it pain to muck out. BUT

then my lami mare had to be on it 1. 1/2 years for her, so i got used to it.

Now i have moved her son on it and he is cleaner on it. I now like it

My boy is messy and wet, he is a lot cleaner and little or no smell.

We use it at work because thats what our supplier has as a large flake. Dont like it at all (weve used it for years) its not absorbant, its hard to break up and it isnt anywhere near as dust free as they would like to make out. BUT they also make one called little max, which isnt all that small but a much nicer bedding - its much fluffier and makes a way more comfy looking bed.

I have and it makes a decent bed on rubber.

A cheaper, depending on where you are, and better, more absorbant bed used on a rubber floor is Giffords Cushion bed. It is a wood chip rather than flake.

I use bedmax on rubber mats - I have a full bed with banks (don't like minimal beds). I find it easy to muck out and it's easy to keep clean (I have clean, white shavings - don't do dirty, brown beds). If I had to pick fault, it's not as absorbent as normal shavings but, they also do a product called 'LittleMax' or something similar - these are small flake shavings and I chuck a few bags down as my base - these are more absorbent. I have tried alternative big flake shavings - they are cheaper but, they aren't as tightly packed and don't last as long so it's false economy really.

It's not absorbent at all it's designed not to be if you want an absorbent bed choose something else
I have also used little max which I like to but it can mark the skin of fine skinned TB's and make them sore.

just looking at alternatives to straw poss or might just stay with straw. she is not too bad on it can just be a bit smelly. she eats cardboard, paper and i thought being a big horse a big flake would be best. I dont have a lot of time so needs to be quick to muck out and cheap if poss. I dont know of any other makes of big flake. I tried magezorb and she hated it.

I mix mine with paper bedding and do a semi deep litter taking out the squelchy bits when required. .. haven't needed to dig any of the beds out in weeks!

I tried sundown that do a similar large flake type but felt I gpt far more value for money with bedmax.

Plus if its by royal appointment is has GOT to be good ;-)

I use it- like it but if I could would change to littlemax. Bed max doesn't stick to rugs etc which is brill and is absorbent but the flakes are so big you loose many on the shavings fork. Little max is like a half way house between shavings and bedmax

Didn't find it absorbent and the flakes are sharp! Prefer Natural Flake shavings, which are same sort of price (from our supplier anyway.)

I tried Bedmax on rubber mats for a while. It makes a good deep bed but as others have said, it really isn't that absorbent.

I now use Five Star Professional wood pellets and find them to be very good.

bedmax is a good price near me so I use it but mix it 2:1 with a finer bed as some of the flakes are quite big. I think it is good stuff, would love to be on straw though!!

I can't stand it! I'm trying different makes at the mo and Bedmax has been awful, clumps together with the poop and has horrible bits of wood in it.

Royal appointment - pa!

On the hunt for another brand that actually works...

I use it mixed with wood pellets to make a deep absorbent bed. Mine have the front half of the stable rubber matted and the back bedded. Both super messy horses are clean and dry this way.

Hate it. Always looked manky even when new put in. Mucked out like mucking out a bark playground and was always hard and wet. Cheaper shavings so much better and used lessof it.

I use bedmax and deep litter it. We have to buy bedding from YO and she buys it bulk and also Bedmax rent a barn at our yard for storage so she gets a good price.

I deeplitter on concrete and once the shavings have bedded down well it makes a good base and I just scoop out the poops. i use about 1-2 bales per week to top up.

We did have Littlemax for a while but I didn't think it lastedmso well and ended up using 3 a week.

I have never found lumps of wood in it, however I did find 2 long shards of wood in Highpark shavings which we had a few bales of when our Bedmax ran out once.

I mix and match; I am using straw pellets at the bottom of the banks then Bedmax and/or bliss bedding mixed in, depending on which tack shop I pass and which is cheaper :p
I really rate the straw pellets for absorbency; means I only have to muck the wet out just over once a week.
Hope that makes sense?!

I hate it! My horse is on Equibright and miscanthus, and takes 5 minutes to muck out properly. His girlfriend, who I occasionally do for the owner, is on Bedmax, and I find it time consuming, difficult to separate clean from dirty, and generally horrible. She's no dirtier than my horse, but it takes far longer to muck her out.

Totally agree with this. I normally mix Natural Flake with Wooburn and get a great bed that is easy to look after and keep white. Just cannot get the same result with bedmax and as the flakes are so huge the whole bed seems to look brown and grubby. Definitely not a fan
