Our yard is part of a dairy and beef farm with various streams running through the property and surrounding areas; as a consequence certain parts of the property are absolute hell during the summer: the midges and biting flies are horrendous. They literally decend out of nowhere in their hundreds as you reach a certain part of the main drive out of the yard. My thin skinned mare is extremely sensitive and even leading her in hand (wearing a Stephen's Controlled Halter) is nigh on impossible as she completely freaks out as they land on and bite into her. This year she is backed so I'm expected to ride through the same area sat on her back :(. Yeah right. I think not!

Soooo..... I need something industrial to prevent the biting flies from bitinge through the material. A lot of the 'ride-on fly rugs' I'm seeing for sale ATM are just thin nylon silky mesh material and don't look as if they'd provide much protection at all.

The Cashel Quiet Ride Bug Armour looks a little better in pictures - but is it really? Does it work against horse flies and biting cattle flies?

ALSO, how can one size fit all? My mare is 16.3 and wide. Are they sure it will fit her comfortably and provide decent coverage depth-wise? I mean, how can it if it will also fit a 12 hand pony????

Not used that one but I did get an HKM one off ebay a few years ago - its brilliant! Its just the silky mesh material but it really makes a difference.

I need mine to cope with the big nasty cleggs that we get around here - Arnie used to come home a hack lathered in sweat and bleeding from the bites - this rug has let us manage to hack in the hot weather!

I use the Cashel. Got 2 of them (for 2 horses). Bought 1, loved it, so bought another. I must have had them for about 5 years now. They're dead tough. Use them every summer, pretty much every time we ride. Never had a problem & will buy more when they need replacing. Black was the only option when i purchased them. Is this still the case? White would be better for the summer. We don't have the bellycsection as i thought it was a bit pricey, so thought we'd see how we got on without it. Would probably have got it if the flies were really bad though.
So to sum up, i love them! :D

Oh i forgot a bit - you need to see the fastenings to understand how they fit, but for a bigger horse, you tie them looser. I've got 2 15.2's & a 12.2. Fits them all :)
And one of mine is SERIOUSLY sensitive to flies, but really gets on with the armour. I'd get the belly part if i were you though (if she's likely to be a madam!) :)
