as it says! looking to try something for condition on my pony but cant use anything that might make him in any way fizzy (well fizzier), emailed d & h and they recommended build up cubes, sent a sample and some info, it does say it shouldnt cause excitability but think im best hearing opinions from people who use or have used it??

also have sample and info on spillers conditioning cubes if anyone uses/has used them?

a & p calm and condition is also an option but i didnt realise you have to soak those nuts, thats not easy as my feeds are made up for a few days at a time and left at the yard!

Haven't tried D+H, but have used A+P - I didn't realise you had to soak them either - oops! Anyway, didn't have great results with them (although that may have been down to not soaking them!).

Baileys No 1 and No 4 have worked best for me. Have used both on retired horses, horses in light work, unbroken youngsters and while on box rest, as well as horses competing 4 days a week. No (unusual) fizziness in any of them.

lol its only from posts on here that i realised the c & c was meant to be soaked, if it doesnt help much anyway then i can rule that out completely.

i havent used baileys feeds (are they still quite expensive?) so il have a look into those 2 and see whats what with them.

thanks.

lol At least it's not just me then!

Baileys are still quite expensive (just paid £7 for a bag of economy mix!) but I think they're worth it. Any "specialist" feed will cost more than bog standard feed.

build-up don't cause fizz but you could try Saracen EquiJewel instead as it works better and although seriously expensive I reckon that I use 3 bags of build-up to one of Equijewel so the cost ends up being about hte same

Build up cubes were fine on all my lot when I had a load of them, but the mix sent my usually calm Murphy loopy, he looked like he had an overactive thyroid, his eyes were popping out of his head and he was on edge all the time. I stick to cubes where possible now as he had never had a reaction like that before and I used to feed him straight barley with no problems.

I used d and h build up for a year on 4 year old tb he was very underweight only 330 when I bought him He weighs 510 now it gave him the extra weight and muscle he needed with no fizz.He is 6 now and I maintain him on the pasture mix but keep the build up if he ever loses condition.

My Irish TB has been on D &H Build up cubes for the last 2 years and they are fab. He has always been difficult to keep weight on especially when he was working but using build up with Speedi beet has worked well.
He's recently retired but before it never made him fizzy

sounds like the build up cubes are the way to go!

thanks everyone for your replies.

reynold - thanks for the tip but i cant get saracen feeds away up here in scotland - bit of a pain as there's a few of their feeds i like the look of!!

I use them for my oldie because they come in cube form and I can soak them. As he is not ridden anymore I cant say if they fizz him up though.

I used Baileys No.4 for my mare and it was effective. She put on weight quickly without going silly. But it is quite expensive if you need a lot of it!.

My boy has been on Build-Up cubes (D&H ones) since the summer. Haven't noticed a massive improvement (but then he is a 4yo TB) but they've certainly not sent him loopy. In fact at one point last summer I was trying to find something with quicker release energy just to whizz him up a bit!

I have used D&H build up cubes on my 17.1hh trakehner since I bought him last July. He was quite underweight when he first came to me but is now an ideal weight. The build-up cubes haven't made him fizzy at all - he is still the calm well-mannered boy that I bought 7 months ago!
It did take about 5 months though before I noticed a real change in his weight and it was coupled with large amounts of haylage!
And pink powder!

Have used D & H and found that it works very well without fizzing horses up.

Used A & P Calm and Condition on my boy and found for the amount I had to feel to keep him in good condition, it became too expensive. He's now on Baileys No4 and never looked back.
