How long should it take before I start seeing a difference in my horse's feet? Not that I'm being impatient, at all, but her feet are starting to look a lot better in the last few days. Seeing as I've only been using F4F for a week and wasn't expecting to see a difference within the first six months, I'd like to know whether I should be attributing this miracle to the F4F or to some other unknown factor!

I probably saw a difference within a month, the farrier certainly noticed a difference the next time he came, maybe 6 weeks or so later.

Well the difference is that she has a sort of "hole" in her foot (well both fore feet actually) where my vet dug it out, between the wall and the sole underneath the foot. The hole is deep at the toe and shallow all the way round to the bulbs of her heels. It's been very slow to close up but within the last few days I have really noticed a difference, one foot in closing up fast and the holes in both toes are getting smaller. I thought it would take forever because her feet grow slowly anyway. I don't know whether to be pleased or not though as the holes are so small now I can't get my cotton wool plugs to stay in to stop her getting muck up there!

Meeee!! Im using it on my cripple, for about 2 months now. He has had no shoes on for a month and I think...just a tiny bit that he looks less low in the heel- but he was in wedges so I think his feet are uncontracting from them naturally.
How is Maiden?

Obviously we're all still at the "hoping and praying this money will pay off" stage!

prittstick - Maiden is, well, on and off. She was fantastically sound (better than I have ever seen her) about two weeks ago then she got colicky and banged the stable door with her left leg all night, making her lame

She's been slowly coming sound again this week only to have broken into the field next door last night and obviously she and Berlin spent the night sorting out their differences. Sadly for me Berlin won, Maiden has a cut above her eye that is swollen, a cut on her bum, and the best bit is that she was lame on the right fore this morning but this evening is lame on the left!! I can't win! I think I'm getting to the stage where I'm only noticing she's lame because I scrutinise her movement twice a day... maybe I should stop looking?!
I hope your "cripple" (poor chap!) is doing ok

It won't affect the bottom of her feet, it only affects the new hoof as it grows. I doubt you would see a difference in one week, but maybe 4 to 6 weeks, at the top of the hoof.

So am I being entirely thick... how does the sole grow?? This sort of question does not bode well for someone with most of an equine degree... but I've never thought about it before!

The holes in her toes are definitely closing up though, and so has the gap between her sole and hoof wall... must remember to get photos tomorrow!

Well actually, I think it is me being thick. I thought you meant the holes in the hoof walls.

no it starts to work really quickly. between farrier visits - at that point once a week!!! he noticed the hoof had grown down and seemed stronger. the horse (tb) now rountinely goes 5-6 weeks in winter and 4-5 in summer (more use). don't know how its works but daren't stop- been on it for 3 yrs now!!! think its the only thing holding his feet together.
