anyone use naf biotin?

I think you will find it has other ingredients 'ash' if I remember correctly. I was surprised at how much had to be used. I used to use Equimins if I could get it and now buy from Robsinsons Mail Order as I think they are better value for money.

I do and I give mine a level scoop which has 40 written on the side. It lasts me over a month at two horses.
I think it has made a difference to mine.

having just looked at the naf general purpose supplement, this contains 30mg of biotin per dose, compared to naf biotin supplement which contains 15mg of biotin per dose and costs more money and as you hve to use more, it doesnt last so long.

1.5kg tub costs £11.20 ish and lasts 30 days!! the same size tub of the general purpose costs £8.11 ish and for a pony, lasts 50 days.

i think once i finish my biotin, i will start using the general purpose supplement as a) its cheaper, b) contains higher levels of biotin and c) it provides all the other vits and mins.

it pays to do some research!

Hi All,
I actually work for NAF (Snr Nutritionist) - I hope noone minds me posting, but I just wanted to clear up a bit of confusion. GPS contains 30mg per kg of biotin - per kg is how we are required to declare levels to comply with labeling laws. NAF Biotin contains 15mg per standard level of 50g - so 300mg per kg. The level in GPS is really only designed to meet average maintenance requirements, and not at a level suitable for hoof problems.

I take on board the comments about feeding rates for different sizes. The reason we don't do this for NAF Biotin is because it's designed to deliver the 15mg per day that, at least until relatively recently, has been recognised for hoof health in most horses. But don't take my word for it, I recommend reading "Equine Nutrition & Feeding" by David Frape - it's considered something of a bible in the horse nutrition world! That said, we would say for small animals 2-3 scoops per day would be adequate.

Science and research does move on and we now realise that not only are a lot of other nutrients important, but that biotin for hoof improvement (rather than maintenance) does need to be adjusted to suit the individual. If you've got a problem with hooves I'd recommend NAF ProFeet which delivers 24mg biotin daily for average horses, and is adjusted with size. Price per day is only around 15p per day more than standard Biotin, and for my money is worth it!

Lastly, hoof health is not just about biotin. While NAF Biotin does include the complementary nutrients of methionine, sulphur and zinc; ProFeet contains optimum levels of those with other key vits and mins and - crucially to my mind - key herbal elements like rosehip which is fantastic for skin and hoof health.
Hope this helps. Kate
