As the tittle says really, im currently looking to swap my insurance company & Am Trust & scottish equestrian have so far given me the best quotes. Am Trust has a higer vet fee limit so i think i may go with them as its virtually the same as the policy i have now just cheeper.

So has anyone used them & could you give me feedback as ive never really heard of them.

Thank you

Yes I insure with them. They used to be the underwriter for Equestrian Direct and then subsequently decided to offer their own direct service. They seem very good to me.

My Trainers sister went with them & has had problems once they paid out on her five year old, they have tried to exclude everything, eg all legs although 1 was the possible source of the lameness & the back, in case that was the source of the lameness & so virtually unable to insure the now sound horse. Be careful, cheapest not always best.

Ended up with them by default when Equestrian Direct stopped using them as an underwriter and they took all the policies with them to finish. I had to claim earlier this year and they were a pain initially. I don't think they're "horsey" as they don't seem to understand things like how I didn't call the vet immediately because my horse was a bit puffy and overweight, I put him on a fitness prog first. When I then claimed (61 days after first thinking there was a problem!) they told me it was an existing condition, then said I should have had a vet out earlier, all sorts, all boiling down to "we wont pay". I really yelled at them, got my vet involved to support me and they gave in.

When they did give in and actually pay they were great. Paid the vet practise within a day or two of me sending my invoices on, paid for all his livery whilst there, all post op care, all post op medicines, everything. I was really pleased ONCE they agreed to pay up. However when my renewal came from them it was massively increased and they'd tried to exclude everything.

I've gone back to ED now because they are horsey enough to realise that "soft palate displacement" does not mean the horse's entire respiratory tract is screwed...

Thanks Everyone for your replies.

Always best to ask isnt it, Im happy with the current policy i have with my insurers but it's just gone ott cost wise so thats why im looking round. Equestrian Direct have already quoted me & there only slighty more expensive but i would rarther pay a bit more & get good cover that doesnt exclude everything if i have to claim.

I can't comment with regard to claiming, but my mare had a bruised foot summer 2006 which I ended up claiming for vet fees, as she had no actual treatment but quite a few x-rays. This was with Petplan. When they sent the renewal this year they had excluded her whole foot (even though she has been 100% for over a year incl completing 4 aff events) and wanted a full vet report and assessment before they would consider removing it, so I started phoning for quotes. Am trust quoted me a little more expensive, but with no exclusions, Eq direct said they would exclude. Needless to say I went with Am trust (because the extra premium was not as much as what it would have cost to get vet out to do a full report) so now have 2 out of 3 horses with them.
In my experience Am trust seemed v sensible.
