Ive been advised to used regumate on our 4 year old mare who is extremely temperamental and proving difficult to break in, has any one else had any experience of Regumate with their mares? Thanks
We have 2 very different mares on it.
1st mare is very hormonal. She was almost stallion like in her behaviour with other horses and was bolshy and rude to handle.
Since having Regumate she much quieter with other horses, she will still squeal and kick out at them but doesn't try to dominate them and is much nicer and more respectful to handle.
2nd mare was very touchy to ride. She would kick out at your legs and throw her toys out when asked to do anything. After a lot of time and money on vets, training etc, the owners were advised to put her on Regumate. She is now a lot less touchy and more biddable but she has become almost aggressive with other horses. She is very grumpy with them and we go for anything that walks past her, which is something she never did before.
One thing I will add, if you haven't been told already, make sure you wear gloves when administering it as it is a hormone and can affect humans.
have used it on a couple of times this year. Mare had gotten to the stage where she was really nasty in her box and spent the whole time in the school bucking and tanking off.
Had tried cutting back on her food etc but was not working so on vet advise tried the regumate, it worked really well and found that we didnt need to use it every time she came into season, just every couple of months.
Was able to take her out and compete this season which would have impossible without it as her behaviour was so unpredictable.
I used it, didnt find it as nasty to handle as I thought, but found NAF oestress was another good way around it if you dont want to use it, it genuinely did work! That said founf the Regumate did a fantastic job!
Our mare is the cock of the field, shes dominant with the other mare and quite possesive, shes sharp to handle and comes across as bolshy but she is also quite nervous, one minute she scared and one minute she seems cocky. I lightly backed her and had sat on her 3 times before we sent her away for further breaking and sending forward, however the people breaking her had major arguments with her and sent her back as unbreakable! She put up a major fight on the longreins and some days her work was perfect and other days she would explode and every time it came to accepting a rider as soon as the rider got her leg over she would explode, so I am now thinking Regumate may be the best thing to try, it seems quite expensive but does it last a while??
Yes it lasts a while, and if it works I think its worth it! thing to think about, is it related to her seasons in pattern (if that makes sense) otherwise it may be alot of money to solve the wrong problem! You only feed in millilitres; about 11 for my mare i think so it does last a fairly long time
We used in one of our mares at the riding school who could be a bit snappy and touchy about grooming/tacking up/mounting despite exstensive saddle and back checks.
We found it did make a difference however there was a strict staff rule about wearing gloves when you handle it especially me who is pregnant as apparently it is quite strong stuff.
Tried this on my mare, to which it had zero effect, but looking back now I think she is just particulary opinionated and wasn't particulary 'maerish' as such.
I now know her more and have to ride her accordingly.
Give it a go, I think if it's supposed to work it will quite soon, just be careful handling it. They give gloved and such, but be careful anyhow.
Magic stuff. When in season my mare stops and won't go forward led or ridden. Can take me half an hour or more to walk her 10 yards. Just spaces out, not nasty at all. I feel sorry for her. She's not in pain or anything, just very hormonal and sensitive. I've had her all checked out everything's fine. Regumate stopped her stopping but she still goes up if stressed when ridden. She'd done that before i had her. I think the previous owners tried to push her through it and now ended up with learnt behaviour. Had her marbled but she pushed it out
Yes I use it on my broodmares. Be aware though if you have stallions, since it has calming affects -- it was this substance that got Michael Whitaker banned, in an apparent mix up of feeds, so be careful with bowls if you use it.
But otherwise, I've found it fantastic and they use it at my work also to keep the mares in foal, and it's great for them.
A friends filly had cystic ovaries and I'm sure it was regumate she was put on, and my mare was put on it to control her cycles pre ai! It definately controlled the fillys temperament, I never noticed any difference with my mare but then she wasn't put on it because of temperament!
Yes one of my mares went through a spate of being very difficult when in season. She was on it for two summers but I left her off it this year and she's been fine. I think sometimes it can help to settle the hormones down.
Be careful handling it though - use rubber gloves. Also the pig version is a lot cheaper than the horse version and just the same stuff.

Regumate is possibly the most over-used and mis-used equine drug!!
It will ONLY help with a mare's behavioural issues IF they are due to her coming into season - and it helps by STOPPING them coming into season! If a mare is 'temperamental' ALL the time, Regumate is unlikely to help!
IF you want to try it, then you should start the mare on it about 10 days before she's due to come into season and keep her on it for 3 weeks. If no change, forget it!
And if a mare's behavioural issues are BAD, then the first thing to do is to get her ovaries scanned - preferably by a repro vet! There are all sorts of mare problems that can cause behavioural issues - haemorrhagic follicles can be painful and persist for weeks or months, Granulosa Theca Cell tumours can make mares behave like a stallion, etc. etc. Regumate is unlikely to help with most of these! Other treatments will!
