anyone use rimadyl

My vet has just prescribed rimadyl for my 11yr old labrador who has had a bad sudden onset of arthritis.
I have read scary reviews online especially for labs. Anyone have any experience?

I used it many years ago for my rotty for arthritis. She suffered no side effects and it did help. Both my current rots also have arthritis (it's a rotty thing!), but they are on Trocoxil which is amazing. They have 1 every 4 weeks for 6 months and then 1 month off.

Use it frequently as a painkiller for dogs. Have yet to have a patient react poorly to it.

In the long term there are other options for pain control out there that are more specific and less likely to cause side effects but they are more expensive and of course unfortuatelALL drugs involved in pain control have a potential for side effects.I would see how she responds to the rimadyl in the short term before I would be considering all the long term options like Troxocil(also a great drug )

You will only ever hear the scary stories online btw people rarely log on to say how much more comfortable and happy their dog is but any issue...(no matter how vaguely related it is to the medication)and its reported.Leaves a very skewed prospective online for most drugs.

My collie x Lab has been on Rimadyl for some time now with no side effects. She did have side effects from Metcam.
I have jut (literally this weekend) started her on Yumove. I have a months trial so we will see what happens.

Thank you everyone. Im feeling much better about it now. I will wait and see how she reacts fingers crossed it will be ok
Out of interest does anyone do anything else to make their dog more comfortable? Ie different beds or magnets or supplements etc?

I know two dogs taking rimadyl without any problems.
A third one has had a dramatic impovement after taking one green-lipped mussel tablet a day. They just bought it at Holland & Barratt's.
The other thing all of the owners have done is get dog's weight down, not too much twisty-turny play e.g. chasing balls/other dogs - if they've overdone it one day they are walked on a lead for the majority of the walk for a few days.

Green lipped muscle pills can be great. Joint Aid has had some excellent results too. I've just put my old Tollers on Salmon Oil to help her manage her arthritis. I also take her for hydrotherapy once a month, and she gets Ttouch and physio whilst in the pool, which really seems to ease things. My Lab suffered with arthritis and she had acupuncture, which again, really helped. Ultimately she was treated by Chris Day, homeopathic vet, as she had developed kidney failure (she had been on Previcox) and could no longer take prescribed medication. The homeopathic medication gave my beautiful girl a further 2.5 years quality life...

Exactly the same here, used it for a number of years for my rotty and it was really good for her with no side effects. I also used to take her swimming which I also think helped. When she was first prescribed it I looked on the Internet and saw all the horror stories and was a bit worried about using it but the difference it made was well worth it.
