I did post this in SY but got no replies so thought I'd try in here!

I am looking at switching to combinations of the above for my girls, or maybe even Prep14 for one in winter.

I would appreciate any feedback or any thoughts on Saracen feed in general.

Thank you :)

I put my mare on bio-life balancer and thought it was a really good feed and she looked really well on it, her coat was shiny and her hooves grew nice. Ive now changed because the starch level was quite high and because shes barefoot the high starch feeds affected her feet. I would definately recommed it fantastic product. :D

I used to feed show improver years ago to the show ponies. They all looked shiny and bright eyed on it. They obviously also looked fat but that's show ponies for you! It looked appetising and they seemed to enjoy it. If I hadn't completely changed the way I keep my horses I'd use it again for condition.

That probably isn't helpful really but the overall message is yep, thumbs up to Saracen :)

Thank you for the feedback guys.

Rosie-ellie at the moment mine are kept on forage only with TopSpec balancer. I have looked at the starch content of BioLife but can't find the content in TopSpec anywhere so would be interested to compare.

Jesstickle I'd only have them on the Show Improver pencils over winter when they are hunting and need extra calories. I am actually hoping they would be ok on the fibre mix as it's only 14% starch and obviously mainly fibre! I have emailed the careline for some advice on this so will wait & see what they say.

hehe, mine now live on the same sort of diet as yours. I cringe at what we used to shovel into the ponies, especially as they hardly got any work either :o

Show improver certainly helped them hold weight FWIW. I've heard good things about equi jewel by Saracen too.

My horses don't work hard enough to get 'real' feed in winter. BH is a lazy toad and survives on sugar beet or in the worst case a bit of calm and condition. But he only gets ridden three times a week max. I hate winter :D

ETA this is the equi jewel gumph. I looked into it for BH when he was looking skinny but then the grass grew!

Equi-Jewel – High Fat, low starch feed supplement suitable for adding calories to a ration without excessive starch intake, a sustained slow release energy for competition horses, conditioning all types of show and sales prep horses and hard keepers and lactating mares and breeding stallions. Highly digestible and efficiently utilised. Contains Super Fibres & Oils for long lasting controlled energy release. Its low starch level will help avoid the behavioural & metabolic problems associated with feeding high grain diets. Produces lower lactic acid levels than cereal diets in hard working horses, so optimises stamina. Supplies a highly palatable and digestible form of oil for outstanding coat gloss & skin condition, whether for the show ring or sales preparation. Ideal for helping to maintain and optimise condition on all types of show horses and hard keepers. Supplies a highly palatable and digestible form of fat. Contains balanced ratio of calcium to phosphorous. Provides fatty acids essential for healthy skin and hair condition

That's given me a thought actually Jesstickle, I wonder if they would winter on the FibreMix plus EquiJewel and that way I wouldn't be worrying about cereal content/starch levels. I will have to give this a bit more thought I think - I hate loading them up with hard feed but one of mine does drop off over winter so sometimes it's a necessity.

I had to laugh at you feeding your ponies all sorts of things & not doing much work. I was guilty of this when I got my first horse that actually jumped, so I thought she should be on competition mix & high performance feeds. I hadn't actually worked out at that time that unafilliated SJ twice a month didn't really warrant full levels of competition mix :o

Equijewel is pretty amazing, it does a fab job. My friends TB wintered out all year in all the snow and she ate Alfa Oil and Equijewel and she came out of the winter FAT.
I think it's a great supplement, I would use it if my horse needed extra calories for any reason :). It gives them a beautiful coat too.
