Yes, we did when I had a horse on loan who "had" to be on shavings.
You did have to go through the bags quite carefully (once found half a chicken pie that my mum had to stop me from eating ), then again someone posted on here that they found a knife in their branded shavings...
Some care is necessary when using sawmill shavings and dust. Certain timbers are toxic. The red wood shavings and dust from tropical hardwoods are VERY nasty!.
I do! Cheaper than branded shavings and never found anything unusual in then, though I do still check thoroughly. Slightly dustier than branded shavings, but not that bad.
A friend used some when she stabled her pony with us, they were awful, they were dusty and smelt horrible. She had a stable on its own, if she had been in the building with ours we would have had to ask her not to use them
My local place sells two types - dust extracted softwood sold as suitable for pet/equine bedding and non dust extracted with lots of sawdust in but free of nails etc
I have used the latter in gateways as tenporary relief from mud as its just £3 for a big bag
I used to when I had mine at home, I got sawdust and shavings and they were both great never dusty, didn't smell etc. We only got charged £1 a bag, and our bags were pretty big and packed in, I only used four between two horses a week But judging by what other people are saying maybe its best to check first just in case!
We do, have done for years, and the only issue we have is storing enough to tide us over the two week Christmas shut down! I can bed four large horses and two mini shets who share from scratch for £8 (stables part bedded / part mats). Keeping beds topped up nicely costs about the same (£8) per week.
I worked at a riding school who used to use them. They had to go and bag them up themselves - I remember when we were young helpers we always wanted to go, I'm not sure why!
They were a bit hit and miss. Sometimes you would get really good ones which were just as good quality as packaged shavings. However, most of the time the quality wasn't as good and as others have said they were dusty and fine.
Always found them really dusty and fine, even though its cheap i wouldn't use it again! I got a blocked nose/congested just making the bed, wouldn't have wanted to be in there overnight ..
Most people on our yard use them and generally they are great, some bags are a bit fine and yeh they are a lottle more dusty but if you have good ventaliation its not a huge problem and they are free to collector so if you are a little strapped for cash its a great option
