I have stupidly small hands (oh for bigger ones and longer arms). Present reins are thick and rubberised, it feels like I’m wrestling with an anaconda. Can anyone recommend some thinner ones? Thanks!

I’ve just bought some new ones from Henry James, they are rubber but not pimpled and slightly thinner than smaller rubber grip reins. I’ve only ridden once in them but they would be worth a look. I like them.

I think it’s the width of the twin plus the thickness of the rubber which confounds me, I’d really like some thin ones
Do you know what make?

Cheap! Decathlon, Shires or Krämer. Pretty sure I've got a spare pair from downsizing out in the garage if you want to try them?

Biothane is a lot less flexible than the ones which have nothing running through the rubber. I've had both. Biothane alone I find ungrippable. They're pricey, too.

Since you will be changing tack on your lovely riding school horse, I recommend you only look at buckles, the small billets can be a right pita!

Those look like Suregrip reins.
I like these a lot especially if your fingers are a bit damaged or arthritic. They come with stoppers and without and are not overly expensive. They are not as long-lived as leather though.

One variation which might suit your small hands OP if you don't mind fabric are Lbbys reins, very soft to handle and supple. They have the suregrip on the inside.

I rode my old share in Sabre fine leather reins and I missed them so much that I bought the same for my current share.

I expected other sharers to complain about not having rubber but no one said anything.
7202 Sabre Plain Leather Reins Colour: Black Width: 16mm (5/8") £ 36.99
They could do with some saddle soap I guess, so I should see to that.

I have a pair of biothane reins from Plas Equestrian and love them. They are thinner than rubber but still plenty of grip - most importantly, they are easy to hold with my small hands!

I've never liked the feel of rubber reins, or thin reins (but I have normal sized hands and long arms). I suggest you try the feel of various reins in saddleries - that's what I would do; hold them like you would on a horse (who cares what anyone might think) and see what you like the feel of.

The reins I like are webbing reins of normal width with the little notches of leather. Continental reins.

I struggle a lot with letting my reins slip cuz I have the attention span of a peanut and the leather pieces help me notice when I’m losing them ??

Ha ha. My reins slip no matter what, even if I glued them to my hands. I know I let them slip. It's a brain thing with me.
