About two weeks ago my vet found a tumour on my lovely 11yo boy's liver. They say there's only a tiny chance of being able to remove it so I agreed with the vet that it was unfair to try. He had raised liver enzymes on his bloods about six weeks ago and this have increased more since then, so the vet says we could only have weeks or months left. He's put him on Denamarin to support the liver as much as possible but says there's not a lot left to do. Has anyone any experience with denamarin in this situation? Did you feel it helped at all? I feel sceptical about it being any use but must admit my boy has seemed rather bright since starting them and has only had one day when he's seemed a little lethargic. Thanks in advance x

Its got the same chemical compounds as milk thistle and SAMe which are both well recognised as drugs used to help manage liver disease.Ive never heard of this drug name before but the chemicals it contains are exactly what is the gold standard medical recommendation for treating liver disease In dogs.

Sorry to heat about your guy.Im glad it seems to be helping.

My jRT was on this for a little while after a routine blood test showed sky high liver enzymes. The only reason that he had the blood test was that he was very lethargic one day and I popped him to the vets as it was the start of a BH weekend...if it had been an ordinary weekend I'd probably have waited to see how he was by Monday. He spent an overnight at the vets on a drip IIRC, some antibiotics and then denamarin was recommended to support his liver. He was on them for about 3 months and I then downgraded him to milk thistle tablets. You've just reminded me to start him on milk thistle again as he's due his jabs and I like to boost liver function before anything like that.

BTW, I bought denamarin online after the first course, it was a quarter of the price of the vets...£20 for 30 tablets against £2.75 per tablet from them!

Thanks for your replies, I'm glad it seems to be useful, I just felt a bit like my vet wanted to do 'something' even though he couldn't actually give any treatment. The cost is covered by my insurance so I'm happy to keep getting it from the vet for now, useful to know if they decide to stop paying out though, thanks
