My mare has had a nasty case of mud fever and tomorrow morning I am going to clip off her feathers. Not that there are much of them anyway. I only have a normal set of blades for my clippers so was wondering if my hairdressing clippers would be man enough for the job?

PS: for those that know me - for God's sake don't tell my OH or son on whom I use the clippers regularly!!

Don't worry I stood her in the river this morning - so they should be very clean (the river was very high and fast - you know the one!!

)

Mind you the scabby bits may cause a few snags!

make sure you groom her first, and this sounds silly but if you cut her feathers with sissors first then it will be alot easier for the clippers to go thro

have done the same thing on a horse before and worked fine, but not sure it was the same clippers

I have use hairdressing clippers on mine before now (so that I got a closer clip) they did a grand job - not even sure anyone noticed after I cleaned them up

thank you Jeddah, her legs should be super clean and dry as I have been battling this mud fever for a week or so now. She has very few feathers anyway, just thought it would be easier to manage the scabs if they were clipped close.

What grade did you set it at?

I have had some Wahl hairdressing clippers for the last 4 years, they cost me £12 and I use them regularly to trim up 4 horses. Best buy ever.

In the winter I use the longest guard in the summer a finer one.

I tried hairdressing clippers once on a horse & they weren't really strong enough for the job. I bought some pet clippers off ebay. They were fairly cheap but were up to the job.

I just used some babyliss mens clippers on mine this morning (stolen from OH!!). They worked fine with a nice number 2 all over the legs!! Not sure they sound the same now tho.....

They were not really man enough to do the fetlocks but were OK just for the back of the pasterns - but not with a grade on, just as they are.

But, they were fantastic for the cat hairs and trimming her unsightly and rather masculine beard!!

Note to self: Must remember to bring them back from the tack room and clean off all ginger hairs before OH finds out!!
