My vet has recommended zylkene for my lami cob as he's started rearing and bucking when I bring him in as he thinks it might help calm him down and hopefully prevent impact damage. Has anyone had any experience using it on horses? I've tried it with one of my dogs before travelling and don't think it had much effect.

Quick back story: he developed weight bearing/stress laminitis in June following an op to remove a chipped bone above the pastern. Box rest for longer than I can remember and now turned out for a few hours a day on restricted grazing and in a paddock the size of a postage stamp.

He's only on half a Bute a day which is today being reduced to every other day but he's started being a complete numpty. The minute he sees my car coming up the drive he's off! Whilst I'm so happy to see hes obviously feeling better, I don't want him to hurt himself or me!

Vet said its ok to walk in hand in the school but I think he will just take off with me. Using a be-nice headcollar definately helps, but would a bridle be better?

Any advice greatly appreciated!

I've used on my *bored but isn't everything exciting TB* on prolonged box rest as he was box cantering, broncing, rearing, bitting and generally being a lunatic. It worked :D Magnesium calmers sent him more bonkers and valerian takes a bit of the edge off, but this just seems to mellow him out and be almost normal again.

It is expensive but it worked and covered by insurance :)

As to walking in hand, wear lots of your own safety gear inc gloves/hat and BP if you feel the need. I walked my loony in hand in a bridle - it took 2 of us as he reared for 20 mins. I also tried a chifney/headcollar combo, all options using a lunge line so you have space to move.

In the end I had to give up on the walking in hand (he wasn't on zylkene at that point) as it was just 20 mins of planting and rearing the minute he left the stable.

Good luck :)

I used it and it had a positive effect on my mare to begin with but the longer she was on box rest the less it worked, she was on half a tube of relaquin a day to keep her in the stable :( wasnt good times.

It normally has a good effect from what I ahve heard the vets say.

I used it on my dog who is terrified of fireworks - tried herbal remedies etc, he always has access to a safe place etc. I wasnt very convinced on reading the leaflet but I was actually very pleased with the results, he was still very scared but it definitely took the edge off!

Yep, used it sccessfully on a wee tb on box rest who was getting dangerous to handle, it seemed to break the cycle of acting like the tasmanian devil en route to her wee penned off area in the field.
