I swear, he must be part shetland.

For context, we have separate paddocks within a huge field (he's in with my older boy), the fencing between the paddocks is post and two strands of electric rope, which is enough to keep everyone else where they're supposed to be.

But not Storm, oh no. I've had him since a yearling (he's just turned 4), and at the beginning he was very scared of anything, I had to be really careful of putting pressure on him to catch him or whatnot because he'd just turn and jump 5ft from a standstill.

I thought I'd sorted this by extending the posts upwards by tying electric fence posts to the top, making it over 6ft. Then he decided he could limbo under it instead. So I put an extra strand underneath the bottom one. So everyone else has two strands, Storm has four.

This morning, my day off I add, someone messages me with a lovely picture of him sleeping - on the wrong side of the fence. Thankfully he doesn't go far from my other horse and even if he did, he can't get out the big field. Fence is all up still.

Looking at hoofprints, it appears he limbo'd under the fence at the bottom of the field into a ditch (I hadn't put extra tape there because I didn't think he'd do it!), walked along the ditch (it's not very deep) and limbo'd back under, to the outside of my paddock.

Oh, and he's a 15h Welsh Cob so not tiny!

Not looking for advice, thankfully everyone else just finds it funny, just sympathy and chance to have a rant!

Chocolate chip muffins available for anyone who got this far.

Maybe not viable for you, but our kangaroo horse could only be kept in by additional fencing with standoffs running both sides of fence adjacent to the top wire. This was on a 7 strand fence as well with strand 2 and strand 7 electrified.

Then………….we had to do same with the gates. Overall cost to do fence and gates 6k on 5 acres.

The number of times I got belted by that fence or a live gate or spent hours trying to find where it was shorting was really not worth it. He lived to 28yrs as well.

Then the kids got shetlands……and that came with a whole set of escape issues but at least we were 90% sorted with the fences by then.

I can't make amendments to the actual fencing as we're on livery, and move fields regularly so if I did that it'd cost an absolute bomb!

I did try and put a row of temporary electric fencing inside the existing fence. He pulled all the posts out.

So I put it on the outside. He jumped it like it was an oxer.

The trick with him, in all honesty, is to keep him busy. And he gets bored easily. I hadn't planned on backing him until this year, but I did lightly last year just to give him something new to do - we were already long lining, riding and leading from my other one, that sort of thing.

You'd think he'd be happy, out 24/7 with a friend, nice grass, nice weather. But no, he wants to see what's on the other side 🤦

No early morning messages today so that's something!

Edited to add, I've been reading the thread about the state of the horse market at the moment - £10k for a nicely going 5/6 year old? I've threatened Storm that if he doesn't behave I'll sell him next year 🤣
