Soooo, I think I've found my new horse :D He's being vetted on Friday and provided that's okay he'll be coming to live with me at the end of next week and I need to buy practically everything as I'm returning after quite a long break.

He's a 16.2hh TB and he's lovely :)

Does anyone want to play shopping? I'm so excited but am so overwhelmed by everything I need to get and all the choices. It was jute rugs with a roller back in my day!

I am luckily getting some tack/rugs but I need:

- A grooming kit - all brushes and something to keep them in - maybe a box that doubles as a step? Happy to pay a bit more for a nice one, not very keen on the bright colours
- Buckets - all seem a lot more snazzy than they were in my day - are the rubbery ones better?
- Headcollar - nice leather I think? and leadropes.
- Heavy weight turnout with neck - good quality but a bargain would be a huge help. Would a detachable neck be better for more flexibility? He's a 6"6 rug apparently.
- Tail guard for travelling (just bought travelling boots off ebay :) )
- Medium and heavy weight stable rugs - or can I do one that has a liner and will do both jobs? Probably want a neck on the heavy at least - maybe a detachable neck would work?
- Brushing boots
- lunging stuff - cavesson, whip and lunge rein at the minimum
- saddlecloths- he's bay so something that will look pretty
- girth

The more I can save the better as I'm blowing the budget for him, but equally I want to get decent quality stuff so I don't have to replace it in a hurry.

I just don't know where to start!

Virtual brownies for anyone that wants to play :)

Ooh how exciting for you! I got some real bargain rugs off preloved for my LWVTB horse who is also 6ft 6 they are second hand but in great condition I got 2 medium weight and 2 lightweight turnouts for £50 and one of them is an amigo :-)

How exciting for you, fingers crossed it all works out :)

Shopping wise, eBay really is your friend! You can get some brilliant bargains on there if you look hard enough. Other than than Equestrian Clearance do most of the stuff you want relatively cheaply, but for things like buckets and whips and things you're probably best going to your local tack shop if you can, as they're awkward to post.

Also, I don't know if you have an Asda near to you, but ours do 'Rhino Trugs' in small and large which are great feed and water buckets (I use the large ones for water, and have 2 small ones for dinners) and they're only a couple of quid and they last a really long time.

Also see if anyone local to you is selling anything second hand as you might be able to get decent quality stuff cheaply that way - look on local PC/RC message boards and see if there is a horsey 'seek and sell' group or similar on facebook as they can be a great place to find bargains.

I know that wasn't really specific, but hope that some of that might be of use to you :)

You can't go far wrong with the Premier Equine rugs - they are fab. They also currently have a sale on.

Personally if I was buying new rugs again I would buy a 200g rug and a liner. You shouldn't need a heavyweight rug or their Trio system sounds pretty good.

Fingers all crossed for the vetting.

thanks everyone :) Sorry for not having replied - can't get on HHO at work :(

Always helpful to have some shopping tips - will check out all the places mentioned :)

^^ agree with the premier equine rugs suggestion :). Great rugs and with the sale really good value for money. I bought a 100g stable and buster trio t/o for my mare and liked them so much when my 2yo needed a bigger rug she got bought a 200g t/o, and my TB has been bought a 40g t/o. I aim to slowly replace all my rugs with them :). They have a liner system which is fab.

Stable water buckets I have a flexi plastic bucket, same with any feed buckets going on the floor as they last longer than rigid plastic IMO and are safer for the idiot who loves putting his foot in his bucket after dinner :p.

Tail guard - I have an elastic velcro one with a tail bag which is great for going to shows (keeping a white tail clean!) :)

Good luck with your new boy :)

I have this headcollar for my grey and I'm very pleased with it. :)

Premier equine rugs for sure, sale on too! Ebay is very good, if you find a product you like on a 'normal' site, search for it on ebay 99% of the time its cheaper. Boots- woof 'club' boots are good for schooling and well priced. Saddle cloths navy, burgundy, green look lovely on a bay. I use a normal headcoller for everyday and a nice leather if going anywhere posh competing etc.

I've got a Robinsons close to hand so they're handy to nip to for general stable/yard... They'll have an end of season sale for rugs etc coming up soon so may be worth keeping an eye out...

I've had some great deals on Ebay for rugs... Most recently, a brand new JHL heavy turnout combo for £42 which was a real bargain...

I'm a gal who likes a bit of glitz too so go a bit weak at the knees when I browse the likes of Pink Equine... :D

Thank you everyone again!

Becca - that's a great point re the buckets- much less potential for damage with a flexi bucket I would imagine. Also v useful suggestion about the tail bag - I'll look into that.

Farracat, that headcollar is beautiful! I really like the trigger clip on the throat - guessing it's much easier to undo that and take off over the ears rather than fiddling with a buckle in the freezing cold :D It's very reasonably priced too :)

Ladydragon and Ellie - sounds like I'm not the only one staking out ebay for some bargains!

Oooh it's all so exciting! Just wish the vet would hurry up and call so I can click buy! He's being vetted as I type but I couldn't make it for various boring and complicated reasons :(
