Hi im looking to buy a 3.5 tonne box but only have about £2000 so obviously goin to be old and not very pretty but if its gets me from a to b for a couple of years it will be fine. Going to see a Talbot express on thurs that looks really nice from the outside but i cant research much on it as never heard of one before.
Anyone got one or have any opinions of them. It looks low to the ground, stable, high roof and nice light and airy with side ramp. Its an E reg but hardly and rust and none looking to be serious. Can i have some info - good or bad. Many thanks.

I have a Renault Dodge 50 - also on an E plate - the only advice that I would give you on buying a box that age is to make sure you take a trustworthy mechanic with you - whilst it might look nice on the outside there is so much underneath that can cost a lot of money to put right. Also make sure that you check the floor thoroughly - if possible have any matting lifted and get your mechanic to poke around. My Dodge looks fine but I know how much I have had to spend on the underneath to make sure it is safe.

Good luck

I have a D reg :)
Took an engineer friend with me and we let the engine idle for ageswith the hood open while we crawled all over the poor vehicle. Checked the floor (needed replacing, but the support system was good) and the chassis, etc ... then ran up and down the road a few times, then let it idle again.
With motors of that age there's always going to be a risk. My friend told me at the time he reckoned it could be made roadworthy within my budget (£2500 total). He was right. the lorry was advertised at £2000 and I got it for £1800. The total bill for the repairs + MOT, etc, was £620 - bang on target. Since then my mechanics have been good to me. They keep repairs cheap and cheerful as they know its a hobby vehicle.

PS - mine didn't look nice on the outside at all! My friend thought this was a good sign as no one had tried to doll it up!!

I bought mine in november last year its a m reg transit 116k on the clock and had been very well maintaine and built, its current stalled for four ponies:eek: all herring bone.. I paid 2500.. it was advertised for a fair bit more though.

id gone to see another one and took a mechanic with me and boy was I glad i did! floors, ramps rust etc on the older boxes it really is IMO worth paying up to 100 quid for some one to look at it, even if you ring a local garge and ask them to do it.
