....It's only been 2 days and i am sooooooo frustrated already!!

Had to go back to A+E today as tweaked something getting up off sofa last night and today is 100times more painful!! Doctor told me under no circumstances was i to get back on a horse for atleast 4 weeks and it will take about 8 weeks for the bones to knit properly!!!

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!! Now i know my health is very important, shouldn't take unnecessary risks blah blah blah etc etc etc BUT i'm wondering how long people have waited before they were able to gently hack out maybe? Unfortunately i'm not sure it's a part of your body it's possible to get physio on etc to heal quicker!!

Am bored to tears already although have done a fair bit of wedding planning!!

Sorry,
Rest,Rest,Rest
On a positive note though, some people heal quicker than others, you will know when you're better, believe me!

Think I cracked some ribs about 5 weeks ago and still sore, have to roll out of bed in the mornings

But on a positive note I rode a couple of days afterwards but found if I wore my body protector it was bearable cos it supports you really well. Wore if for a least 2 weeks

I know rest, rest, rest but sooooooooooo boring. Got a big lecture from A+E doctor about how much he hates horses as sees soooooo many injuries from them

Will be on here a lot i think, amazing how much you can do via a computer. I've booked wedding venue/date and found the dress i want to try on when i can get up and about again!!! Every cloud and all that......

Bodyprotector when i get back on is a good idea, can see how that would support.

Now can i have a glass of wine with these piankillers do you think....???

Ive broken my ribs a couple of times. In all it took about 6 weeks. The first 2 weeks are the worst, you DONT turn over in bed, you cant bend and you DONT sneeze!!. Things like Arnica tablets helps a bit but really its just time. Be careful if you are getting married soon - wedding night and all that!!!! with broken ribs thats out of the question!!

You should be riding in about 3 to 4 weeks but GENTLY.

Thanks for that, i will just have to grin and put up with being bored for a few weeks then.

Not getting married until next summer so worries there....that kind of thing is WELL out of the question for some time

!!!!

First time rode the week after at a HT but had not realised that was what I had done till after god it hurt, second time was multipul ribs both sides and cracked chest bone, could not even turn each side, won't go into detail but was 6 weeks before I could even throw a rug, let alone ride

Healing vibes

awww i feel for you.... 2 days ago i also dislocated and fractured my elbow so im also gonna really miss riding and being able to do things.... hoping internet will keep me sane also

i had coedine and archers last night and it went down a treat :-)

Oh no sorry to hear that. Yep have a nice glass of red to wash down my 2 types of painkillers!!! Going down quite nicely, hopefully will help me sleep!!

Saf that sounds soooooooo awful. Knowing how painful 3 on one side are i can only imagine multiple on both sides and chest bone!!!

I withdrew from Tweseldown this week anyway but was hoping to start at Munstead which is in 5 weeks......we'll see but i guess it's unlikely if i'm not back on until 1 week before. Maybe if he was experienced but be silly to go if he's had such bad preparation. Think have managed to get him exercised this week so that's something!

Hi

I broke 2 ribs getting trampled by my lovely 16.2 hh mare at a showjumping event, it was practise for the next day. Went to A and E, was told NOT to ride for 6 weeks. Went to showjumping the next day and won a red rosette, it hurt like hell at the time was out of breath etc, but also went back the next week and rode every day since. Im a tough cookie. Broke other bones too and rode way before advised. I would not reccomend anybody doing anything out of their comfort zone though, this was just me.

the last thing you need is a punctured lung!!!

Hi,
This was in my case, my ribs were not broken in the way that I could have got a punctured lung. Bear in mind, broken ribs is a loose term, most are fractures as were mine! You can fracture a rib from an over exhuberant sneeze!

This is my experience, I do not reccomend anyone follow suit, the doctor was fully aware I was going to ride the next day, she advised against it, but said do things when you feel comfortable. I have no problems with my ribs as a result, so in my case no damage was done. Some people have sore ribs for years after they break them.

I broke a couple of ribs a few years ago, was a couple of weeks before I rode again. First time was a nightmare as I had foolishly booked a lesson and horse was feeling quite full of himself and once in canter he had a whale of a time and I was struggling to breath without it hurting like hell and had to abandon the rest of the lesson. Wearing a body protector does help though, three weeks after the accident I went hunting, ribs strapped up and body protector on and with a bit of cherry brandy felt great all day!

Just be careful, you'll know when you're ready to get back riding as things like getting out of bed, getting in and out of the car feel more comfortable.

Thanks everyone. Will play it by ear i think and see how i feel. At the moment i can't walk across the room without agony or breath properly so i think it'll be at least a couple of weeks. We'll see i think.......have gone for the wine option and is going down nicely

I cracked a couple of ribs last year falling off my young horse, well it wasn't the fall, but the fact that he caught me with one foot as he turned to avoid me when I hit the deck. The pain wasn't too bad for the first hour or so, but by that evening I was in absolute agony - took me 10 minutes to lie down in bed only to find it was even more painful lying down, but I couldn't sit back up again. 4-5 days later I went to ride my old horse who is out on loan, just for 20 minutes at walk to help my confidence, and then a few days after that started on my young horse again, but just at walk with very short periods of trot, on the school. The pain was very bad for about two weeks, and then gradually improved and I was fine by about 8 weeks after my fall. I found a back protector helped, although it was fairly agonising putting it on! Hope you're soon feeling better.

If it makes you feel better - I have been advised to wait a whole bloody year!!!!!!!!!!!! Had my accident in Sept 08 been 6 months and I am going insane not riding - I am very very tempted to get on!!! Rock on September 13th 2009 when I am offically allowed to ride again!
Mind you I dread the sore riding muscles I am going to endure!

eventing a few years ago i broke 2 ribs in the SJ and about half an hour later, went XC!!

i was desperate to go XC on new horse and lied when the doctor was poking me and saying 'does this hurt?'

went to A&E next day and they confirmed 2 broken ribs and lots of muscle damage to my side and lower back.

2 months for me. Got worse before they got better. Turning over in bed was agony even doped up on painkillers.
