Does anyone have any experience of retiring a younger TB?
My boy D's behaviour has become more and more unpredictable recently and with his health problems it is not possible to bring him back into full work or as a happy hacker.
So retirement is the only option and I was wondering if anyone had a younger tb that they've had to retire and how he/she coped with retirement?

I' ve got a six, actually 7 yrs old now(!) who is on an extended holiday

He is happy as larry, but is basically been cared for the same as if he was in work ie. shod, rugged, in overnight in winter, 2x feeds etc etc This TB would not 'rough off' happily.

Our YO rescued an ex racer TB who had been in so many homes you wouldnt believe. While she does hack him a little, she has basically retired him as he is unpredictable and doesnt find hacking enjoyable.

He has coped extremely well with retirement, he has an older retired gelding as a field companion and is much happier than if she was making him do lots of stuff he didnt want. And ironically, it has made him a lot more relaxed when she does occasionally take him for a hack (weird youd think he would be worse).

Friend of mine had a 5 year old had alot of behaviour probs....basicly very unsafe to ride,OK to handle on ground, would have killed you once in the saddle. This TB mare went out as a companion to a cob mare and lived out 24/7 quite happily,my friend got lucky as this mare loved being out and well rugged coped very well, and found a good home into the bargin.......I think you would need to watch and see if the horse was coping with the change of routine, and take it from there as you know all horses cope in different ways...Good Luck!

I'm pleased to read that.
My boy would be stabled at night in winter, rugged if its raining or too cold as he is now and he'd keep his front shoes on.
He is kept with a friends filly so he has her to keep in line

and he has her other mare as company too.
I don't think he would cope with being roughed off

In that case I'm sure he'll be fine

Just keep an eye on his weight.

Mine was retired the minute he came out of racing as a 4 yr old, he had blown two thirds of his tendon, but we still took him on.... He has been a field pet ever since, lives out well rugged with plenty of hay 24/7 365 days a year....

I think he loves life..... after all the only other thing he knew was racing

I retired a tbred as a 4 yr old when we found he had wobblers. Hes really happy living out with a nose to tail Fal in winter and is at Tannington hall retirment home, loads of grass ,space and friends. No hard feed but he keeps condition really well. I cant decide whether to leave him there or bring him home,he needs space to tear around and here he would need to be in at night.
