Anyone with foreleg PSD experience?

Hi. We've booked OH's horse in to equine clinic on Monday for lameness exam - I suspect PSD but just wondered if anyone has experienced this and recognises the symptoms. First went lame approx 8 weeks ago after first PN, approx 2/10 front right and only showing with lame leg on outside of circle lunging(appears sound when ridden). No heat or swelling. Back sound and in gradual work again after approx 2 weeks, just started doing more fitness work in canter and he's lame again on lunge. Same as before, 2/10 and only with lame leg on outside - fine on other rein. Again, no heat or swelling. Been shod since first bout of lameness, no signs of bruising or abscess etc. Aaargh!!
 
Sorry for a stupid question but what is PSD?

Am I having a blonde moment and it is something simple?

I hope your horse is ok, it sounds just like a friend of mines horse, I would be intersted in the outcome?
 
Hi. Proximal suspensory desmitis - injury to the top part of the suspensory where it joins the back of the knee. Anyone who's horse has the condition will def know the term hence the reason for the post!

Hi, what clinic are you going to ?

My Mare had PSD in her front right and both back legs. She had shockwave in front which appears to have fixed the PSD in that leg. However the shockwave didn't work on her back legs so she had the Neurectomy and Facitotomy operation in March.

That doesn't appear to have worked either although it has an 80% success rate and a lot of horses have returned to full work. I think my horse is just unlucky.

Hi. He's at Hird & Partners in Halifax. Vet called yesterday to say he had blocked sound at the suspensory region so scans etc now to confirm diagnosis. Sorry to hear your's had it in three legs - was he lame on all three? Vet has already mentioned shockwave which seems to have a good reputation so fingers crossed we can fix him!
 
She was only lame on the front one when lunged on hard ground on a small circle. She was unsound but not lame if you see what I mean on both back legs. It was more obvious when lungeing/ long reining. She would go disunited, buck and bunny hop and get very upset at canter.

She went to Hirds and I was very impressed with the way they looked after her, plus you can visit them. She was in a barn with several other horses which was good as she gets upset on her own.

I think we have just been unlucky, I'm sure your boy will be okay. Shockwave is usual for front legs as it has a better outcome than for back legs. If you search for PSD on the forum quite a lot of people have posted about it.
 
They do seem to be really nice at Hirds - although I wish they would call me to let me know what they've found. I only found out about the positive nerve blocks yesterday because I rang out of desperation (no fingernails left!). I'm a bit worried because although they said he's definitely shown improvement after the block on the front leg, they were also concerned about the hind leg on the same side - not lame as such, just looks like he's too much on his forehand. Aaargh!!! Waiting now for results of scans on front leg and further investigation into hinds. He's never bunny-hopped or been prone to going disunited though and he's not a bucker...I hate this waiting!!!
 
All vets are the same large and small animals. They say they will ring you, then don't so you sit there waiting, then ring them in desperation.

If he has been lame in front he maybe sore elsewhere from not moving correctly. Fingers crossed.
 
Ha ha. I think I need to stop stressing so much about it! Thanks so much for your positive comments - just what I needed to cheer me up. Just want him back home now so we can look after him - plus his pal is missing him really badly and its breaking my heart hearing him whinneying in the field every five minutes.

I really hope you make some positive progress with your horse and you can get those hind legs sorted.
 
Friend's horse has just started walk work ridden for a front leg PSD, sounds very similar to your horse OP before the diagnosis - on/off lameness, mainly seen on lunge etc.

He had about 3 months off - supposed to be box rest I think, well at least initially, but he wasn't a good patient and banged/box walked, so he has been penned in a stable sized square for his "box rest" and walked in hand - I think buiding up to 30-40 mins twice a day.

He also had a course of shock wave and the most recent scan showed really good healing, so the outlook for him is very good hopefully and he will return to SJ/eventing.

Fronts have a much better diagnosis than hinds according to the vet.
 
Hi. Thanks for your reply. I've spoken to our vet today - unfortunately ultrasound hasn't confirmed PSD so MRI tomorrow!! Sounds like it's still the most likely outcome though. We're bringing him home on Saturday to start the box rest

Good to hear the prognosis for your friends horse sounds positive. Hoping ours is the same and we can get him back eventing again in time.
 
My mare has recently been to Hirds for treatment and surgery (not the same condition as yours) but just wanted to say that I was more than impressed with the treatment and conditions there. Peter Schofield was the Vet who dealt with my horse, excellent vet and like you I was a little short of info but believe me, they are extremely busy there. Cant praise them enough!!
