My yearling mini still has a thick winter coat, is this normal? When I brush him it comes out in handfuls but it grows back just as thick. His face has a smooth summer coat but the rest of him still looks part pony, part yeti!

My minis are still very wooly compared to the horses. They are moulting but not quite as quickly, plus its is still quite chilly still so perhaps thats something to consider.

Sorry i cant be of more help! :)

Thanks, that's reassuring! My neighbour's minis have sleek summer coats so I was starting to get a little worried.

Yep mines looking awful he was moulting then stopped and now randomly throws out masses of fur but it's not getting any finer yet lol I trace clipped him Shetland style the other day as his belly and neck were annoying him so now he really does look ridiculous lol

This is fluffy offender

Very smart SG! Barney is way hairier than that unfortunately. Still over an inch thick all over and goes curly like a sheep when it rains.

Our new mini is still very hairy. Just starting to moult properly now, just putting it down to the late arrival of spring, its still quite chilly! -

Mine have mainly summer coat, but all their winter coat sort of fell out all at once last week haha

I have to clip my mini every spring just leaving the leg hair on so that if the weather turns a rug will cover bare bits. I use cattle blades as his coat is usually at least 4in long !

My little chap is in his full summer coat. Lost it pretty quickly once he'd started, only took 2 goes with the shedding blade to get it all shifted (I do like to help him out a bit).

Trouble is, I can now see that he's putting on weight quickly too - so time for some exercise. Off to the pound shop at the weekend for some potties to raise up my trotting poles so I can make some mini jumps so we can have fun exercising together!!!!

I've had a mini for years, and find he keeps his winter coat at least a month longer than the other ponies. We usually have a sleek fine-coated pony for most of August, then he grows another shaggy coat for next year...

I have several Mini Shetlands some have lost their coats and looking great, typical the two that are booked in for Royal Cornwall are still holding on to their coats :-(

Wow, those shetlands are gorgeous :D

Sparky is just losing his coat, and it's what, almost June?? :(
Stupid country :p

Ah he'd be great. Id love to show mine he's registerer but he's got stringhalt in a back leg had it since he was born so field ornament and possible trap work for him. He's destined to be the best looked after mini ever full size stable groomed every day and to him this is what every horse has LOL I try to tell him most minis are in herds and have to stay out in rain - he doesn't believe that minis should get wet otherwise they shrink smaller LOL

A miniature mini :p
I don't know much about showing so i'll be waiting nearer the time to ask questions about it, although I may be showing Paddy end of this year into next year! Perhaps I should start asking questions now?? :o

Lol well I don't know about showing but I think a mini looking like he's idicating using his leg is probably not a desirable breed trate lol maybe I should train him for Shetland grand national he could get close and take out some of the opposition with his leg flying out lol poor buttons I do take the mickey out of him

Shetland grand national would be AWESOMEEEEE :D

Glad someone else has posted about this, was just about to myself!

Mine are still both really hairy! Although one is moulting in patches... anyone elses doing this? Underneath his mane hes obviously getting warm and he has a beautiful summer coat... but only under his mane!

My 4 live in a herd either in a barn or out in the paddock. They very helpfully groom each other unfortunately in patched, so they all look like the moths have got them. The furminator has been working overtime the last 3 weeks and they still look part yeti, part chewed rag. Cant imagine any of them ever being suitable to show this year, or even to be seen in public.
I think next year it has to be clippers, i cant stand the state of them.
