Does anyone hunt with the RA? I want somewhere I can just go socialising and galloping on the flat (horse and I aren't any good at jumping over 2'3" yet!), I've heard the RA is pretty much non-jumping country?
Anyone?

Nah just come with the Wilton- there's a group of non-jumpers but hunting has a funny habit of making you extra brave (or maybe thats the port at the meet :smirk: ) and you never know, you may feel the desire to jump a little hunt jump.....

See this shows how uneducated I am about hunting, I thought that ALL hunts were about 100 horses galloping over a 4' hedge, and me getting left behind as I'm too scared to jump it! Ask your sister... I'm a SERIOUS wuss about jumping!
Will have to see anyway, won't be this season at least!

Have been with them a few times as was in the RA pony club..one word...it is one QUIET hunt!! hours of standing around and the odd little spin across the plain...!! Freezing cold and wind always- as it is over Salisbury Plain!!oh and never jumped a single jump either!

I don't hunt with them but with an adjacent hunt. Two people from my yard do go with the RA though and from what you've described I think it would probably be ideal. Lots of galloping over Salisbury Plain, very social and no jumping. Nice crowd of people from what i can gather as I know quite a few other people who hunt with them too.

I was regular with the RA until I moved away. Hunting is pretty much flat/non jumping country although they were looking for obstacles to add when I was there. There was a bit of waiting around but then again there are lots of open gallopy bits with hardly any roads/gates to negotiate so little danger of getting left behind. Besides, if you did get left at the back, the country is so open that you will be able to see everyone in the distance!
Friendly hunt too and a core of regulars who are all v. down to earth. Nick Horby is the sec and he's a nice chappie.
Only one word of warning - holes! When hunting on the impact area be very careful where you go with your horse as the area is peppered with shell holes, which are often just the right size for a horses leg. My mare put her foreleg in one when we were walking along - she was in it above her knee! V. lucky. Regulars will guide you round these areas and it is only the impact area which is dodgy.

Give my love to the Plain if you do go...miss it terribly!!

There are always lots out with the Wilton but we rarely jump anything bigger than 3'3 and theres a large group of non-jumpers- you just introduce yourself to the secretary at the meet and tell her you're not jumping and she'll look after you!!

Hmm, very tempted now! It's something I've always wanted to do, but thought I couldn't as I can't make myself jump! Might have to see for late this season/ early next... :-D yay!
ETA: also having a jumping lesson tomorrow so I'll see how that goes, lol!

Come out with the Avon vale just outside Trowbridge!
We have 2 groups jumper's and non and our jumps don't often exceed 3ft and thats usually a bush!

Also it's quite easy to pop a small jump and then join the non jumping group again

Gosh this is old, but I've just seen it. For anyone who's not Boss or Parrisienne Girl, my mum is the secretary - she'd be mortified if she knew she was being advertised as a 'nanny' - she doesn't mind some of the time, but gets fed up with hoardes of people following her when she just wants to have a nice day's hunting for her money! I think they need to appoint a non-jumping master too look after everyone, so many people don't want a jumping day at the moment.
