Anyone's dog had a dental?

Mr. Prince went to my vet for a new patient check-up last Saturday, and apart from his minor skin allergy, he has great knees, hips, eyes, ears, heart and lungs. Not bad for a pet store pug. I beamed with pride when the vet commented on, "the cleanest facial folds and ears of any pug I've seen." What a saddo, but I do take great pride in such trivialities

Anyway, Prince does have one issue entirely not of his own doing: tooth decay (in his previous home he was fed doughnuts and pastries aplenty). And so, at the grand old age of five and three months, my vet is keen to do a dental.

Has anyone's dog been through this procedure? Is there anything I should be concerned about? Is the dog sedated or is it GA?

Beastie had her teeth done while she was getting her lump removed. Vet figured while she was under GA she may as well get full doggy MOT! Vet said for a dog of nearly 9 her teeth were in cracking condition

Any I have seen done were under GA

Neither of mine have had a dental, but when Millie was about 5 she ran head first into a bird bath and smashed a whole load of teeth in.

She was done under GA. Becuase there was so much damage she was fed soup for a week the gradually swapped over to tinned food then back to her hard feed.

She was feeling sorry for her self for a while, but copes fine with all her missing teeth.

I do them all the time! Nothing at all to worry about, very routine. It is a GA but as nothing invasive is being done they are kept pretty light. If they have any teeth out it is a little sore afterwards, that's all really! Congrats on the pristine facial folds

- Sweep has his gnashers checked as part of his MOT's but they are always really pleased with them and haven't touched them.

Poor Prince - doughnuts and pastries??

He is now on green tripe and "health nuggets" for treats, though I have to disguise veggies in his food. Unlike Stella, he even turns his nose up at apples and raspberries. I guess they're just not sweet enough when compared to pastries.

Thanks, all, for the tips on his majesty's toofers.
