my pup had to have surgery at 12 weeks old having pulled a thread out of her fleece and swallowed it. she did it overnight in her cage, arrgggh. prior to that she had been pretty poorly with colitis as she didnt come to us in a good way at all (another story). we thought we would lose her at one point, it was horribe.

fast forward and she is now 10 months old - looking brilliant, full of beans and just fab. no 'toilet' issues, in that she is solid and regular

it has taken a very long time however to get her clean , even in her cage. almost like she has hasnt had the same control she should have. for months she would go out and do a pee and poop, come in, and 1/2 hour later poop in her cage again. anyway, that 'seems' touch wood to be under control.

i wondered if there is anyone else whose dog has had similar and if they have been left with any side effects? despite my wee lass being 100%, EVERY morning, without fail, when she wakes up at about 6am, she wretches and heaves as if she is going to vomit. she is still in a cage in our spare room and the first few times i heard it i flew through, to find nothing!!! the vet says she is fine!! its very odd....

Henry had an op when he was about 2 years old, after eating his way through the contents of a bin one night. He hasn't got any side effects though. Could there be something in her crate that she is chewing on that is making her choke a bit?

thanks - no, i dont think so. she cant have any bedding or any toy she can break at all... when we got her she was starving and has been left with a real thing to eat everything possible. we just cant risk it - all she has is a v big kong (the black one),her metal bowl and water.

Unrelated to the op as my dog hasn't had an op for anything but one of my girls will get gaggy and wretchy if she has a very empty tummy. We literally feed a few biscuits at intervals throughout the day to stop her having an empty tum and avoid this happening. (ontop of her usual meals obviously). It sounds likely your girl could be the same, given the time of morning shes gagging. I would try giving her just a very few biscuits or a tiny amount of whatever it is she eats last thing at night before you go to bed and see if the problem stops.

It is common for dogs to get this if they have excess acid build up so unlikely to be related to previous surgery. Always seem's about six am ish that they want to be sick and they'll either bring up nothing or bile (dark yellow liquid) best way to help is to feed your dog a slice of dry toast last thing at night ie ten pm ish and this will help to mop up any acid in stomach.

I also note that your dog came to you starved. My thirteen year old whippetX came to be when she was three and she'd been starved. We've had this problem ever since we've had her so could be due to how much weight they'd lost xx
If it carries on I'd advise you get a vet check xx

hi there, thanks for the advice, that sounds a very plausible explanation, i will try the toast. she has been to the vet and been checked, but they say she is fine.

im hoping i can actually leave her with some vetbed or bedding of some sort eventually, as at the mo she just cant have any.. its such a shame. she has to be out on an extending lead all the time in the garden as well as she will literally just try to eat the ground. vets say its just a psychological thing she has been left with. her doing this all the time wasnt helping with getting her clean as i had no control over her intake - but we've been in a strict routine on the extending lead for 2 months now and i havent had to clean the cage for ages (touch wood)
