Bit the bullet today and decided after seeing all the clipped horses at HOYS yesterday that mine were too fluffy (the WB), and WAY too fluffy (the sec a). Have a Fun ride on Sunday and WB has been getting sweaty.
So full shiny water proofs on clippers set up and oiled- bring out WB who was good to clip last year twice just needed to twitch quickly at the end to do the tickly bits. So thought as he was only having his legs left on and no lines I'd 'whip that off quickly' first. Tie him up turn on clippers in right hand whilst stroking him with left gradually bring in clipper to the shoulder ON TOP of my hand and he throws a complete bender plunging and throwing himself around (dangerously so
), turned off and went and got the small clipper that i trim him with before every show and he threw a paddy about that too! So put him away as clearly we were going nowhere even twitched.
So got the Sec A out who had to be held down by 3 people last year and only took his 'bib' off to show him nothing to be fear etc. Now i have been working with him for 2 week stroking him all over with the trimmers in my hand and he is still a bit twitchy over them. So i thought as everything was out just try and get him used to the sound- not bothered at all and managed to do a pretty decent blanket clip and the only bit he didn't like were between his front legs and his stifle area which i left as he's been so good for the rest. Could not be prouder of the little muchkin. Just another example of how far he's come.
I'll keep working with the trimmer on the big boy, but the way he behaved today I fear I may need to get some dopey drops from the vet.
Anyones else horse completely baffle you sometimes?

I know what you mean though! It's another case of a crisp packet/jump wing/ slight bump on the surface being much scarier when going past it in the opposite direction!! I once tied my very sensible 3 yr old up on the yard and he threw himself on the floor in the biggest paddy ever, I untied him and he got up from his knees and then stood perfectly =/ horses!! who'd have em' eh?!
