Sunny (sister's horse) is getting very territorial when it comes to the mare's in the field next to ours. He paces up and down the fence and calls to the mare's, one in particular

They have got in with the mare's on Tuesday (don't know who broke the electric fence) and Sunny was charging at the geldings in the next field protecting his herd

Is this normal gelding behaviour when mare's are in season or could he be a rig? Just had another gelding in next field and 2 more mare's arrive in the last week

We think he was cut late as he has a large crest. Is it worth having a chat with the vet re this? YM has been great and mare's are now seperated from ours by a field (two fields were open to make a big one - gate now shut so mare's can't reach our field) whilst the mare's are in season. And sorry to be a pain but how often do mare's come into season?

Thanks, and yes that sounds like Sunny to a T - he won't let Pidge anywhere near the mare's whatsoever

My gelding was cut late (at nearly 4) and is still quite colty (he's 6 now). I have two other geldings, and he can't go in a field with them because he gets very excited and tries to mount them! They run away, he chases them biting their bottoms, and it all gets a bit hairy. He's never been with any mares, but I can imagine he'd be a nightmare.

He's not a rig, he has been properly gelded, but I think because he was entire for so long some of the hormones or memories remain. On the plus side, he's got a fab topline and lots of presence!

Mares usually come into season twice a year, but in some cases where there's a hormonal imbalance it could be more often.

My gelding was cut at 4, is now 19 and 'covered' OH's mare the other day (not that she minds - in fact she's the instigator) - hes been tested and is definitely not a rig although did cover 2 mares as a 3yo before he was gelded

hmm yes Sunny does have a fab topline and he most certainly has presence!!!! He did mount Pidge at the last too when friend was bringing them in

Oh thank god they only come into season twice a year

My pony does, he's only allowed turned out with certain mares and gelding as theres a few he gets very naughty with, he pinned a poor little arab down on the ground over a mare!! Though the arab is just as bad, he's just small and skinny compared to my pony so lost the argument!

Yep, both mine are late cut ( 6 and 7 years) and both still think they are all man at times!

Pidge Im afraid most mares will be in seaon a lot more often than twice a year.... perhaps the poster was thinking of dogs?

mine does!
i have no choice but to put him in with mares as my YO is a pain

Theres one mare in particular that he "loves" and no other horse is allowed near her.
Its got to the extent where he actually mounts the mare.
I'm not entirely sure what his history is either, all i know is that he raced at 18 months old so could have been done really early or quite late

he's going to have some blood tests though to see if he is a rig

My gelding thinks he is a stallion. I'm sure he was gelded late, but I haven't put him in a situation where he is near lots of mares. He has lived with one mare for years and the mare is always the boss. He is so submissive to other horses though I doubt he would try to control a herd or be aggressive to others when mares are about. He has obviously been in a herd with mares and foals before because he would not go near the mares and foals at my old work, and was very submissive to them. All he had to do was walk past their field!

Mine thinks he is a stallion is very territorial over tha mares and gets really wound up if any other horse leaves the yard without his permission. It's ok for him to go out however (typical man!!). He also has an impressive topline. he is kept on his own or just with geldings. Was supposedly cut early(hmmm), sometimes wonder if they got it all!?

* puts hand up in shame* Mine is a total sex pest

He's Ok with other geldings, although he likes to play 'boy's games' all the time....... but he LOVES the ladies! He'll mount anything that'll stand still and he falls in love very easily.

He's seven now and I think he was cut at 3 or 4.

My lad is extremely possessive of "his" mare (who also happens to belong to me). It can be a nightmare. If we hack out with her and another gelding he spends the entire time trying to scare off the other boy. If I hack out another horse with my mare, he careers round the field like a loon. At this time of year in particular he gets anxious if he's away from her and calls to her.

I find that I just have to persevere with him and eventually he calms down. I think the first flush of spring makes them all a little loony!

Yep..... cant put merlin next to mares as he spends all his time protecting the fence!!!

He has been turned out with a mare only and he was in love.... .never saw him do anything sexy with her, but if another horse went by he would race to the fence with his teeth bared!!!!

At the last yard we were at he had to go next to the mares (this is how i know its not a good idea) and he stood by the fence to 'attention' and was dribbling

He was cut after he was 2 so maybe memories remain ??

Yup, F is a dreamer when it comes to the ladies. He has got a daughter - we don't know how really, because when the ladies come up and flirt he goes all bashful and blushes, hiding behind his forelock and shuffling his feet a bit!

Blue does, he bullys all other horses and shags the mares whenever it takes his fancy

he used to jump fences and gates to get to them (and the better grass) but has calmed down a bit now he is coming up for ummm 8yo?!

My boy, (gelding) pulled a post and rail fence down to get to a stallion on the other side, I think he would have killed him if he'd got at him. He's also been known to attack a gelding that was turned out with a mare next to him. Went thro' electric fence that time.

I now keep him at home with a mare companion and all is well. He is alright turned out with geldings as long as no mares about and as long as the other geldings aren't dominant.

Men!
