Anyones horse go better in a single joint?? **HAPPY POST!**

Hey guys,

well as some of u may know, i have issues with my strong mare plowing along on the forehand and the thought of a half halt for me is a dream never even mind a HALT!! :S.......Well, i have been told by an experienced horse person that she has a high pallette which got me thinking 'hmmm maybe she would be comfier in a single joint?' so i borrowed a friends tonight and my goodness we were doing halts where all i needed to do was take the leg off and sit deeper :D (with a little pull on rein) trot-walk transitions and canter-trot transitions with a loose contact. Could feel her back end coming right underneath me and her ears were forward the whole time like she was really enjoying herself!:D:D:D:D Its funny because once i tack her up she normally snail paces out the school with her nose on the floor and i almost need to drag her (very unenthusiastic) however as soon as i tacked her up tonight she march outside with her head held high?! hopefully this is no coincidence! i was on such a high coming home from the yard i actually forgot to take off my riding hat and only noticed i was still wearing it when i was reversing out the drive!! :D:D happy happy HAPPY :D:D anyone elses horse go better in a single joint??
 
thanks guys, tonight i actually realised we have different 'settings' in walk, trot and canter....pushed her into extended trot and it actually blew me away!!!! :D:D
 
Fantastic news! Well done you! What was she in before?

Mines in a single joint,...which is great in the school and respects it well,...as soon as we get out she is very strong and her brakes arn't....ideal! So wondering if I need to swap too....but its a mine field :rolleyes:
 
Excellent! Pleased you've found the right one for your lass. Gives me hope for Grey Mare (we're still working on it!).

Dizz hates any joints, so we've gone the other way with her - an egbut Vulcanite mulhan(sp!).

My sister's pony also goes better in a single joint. Not to the extent you describe, but every 5 minutes or so in a french link he curls his head to his chest (just for a second or two) then brings it back up, but he does it much less in a single joint
 
Glad you've found something that works:D

Two of my mares have been far happier in a single joint, both the big geldings have double jointed bits although I'm keeping an eye on one of them because he 'plays' so much with it and the little gelding completely freaks out with a double jointed bit. He came to us with a terrible reputation and a Dr Bristol. He's fine with a big chunky single jointed snaffle or a nice thick vulcanite pelham.
 
My last horse much preferred a single jointed bit as does current Heffalump. The only other thing he likes is a loose ring with a big lozenge. French link or smaller lozenges cause a very fussy mouth and extensive tongue flapping.

He particularly likes the very curved single jointed bits like the JP bits.
 
I usually use a french link loose ring but shes mega strong/no brakes and doesnt respect it. The fixed ring one she leans on horribly and I also have a nue schule tranze lozenge elevator which is the best of the 3 although she now leans on it on the middle ring. If I put it on the bottom ring she will jump quite nicely as she raises her head :)
 
My tbx hates single joint bits tbh - I believe he disliked the nutcracker action as he would pretend to be a giraffe whenever this type of bit was used and did not go well at all.

That said horses for courses or rather horses for bits...;)
