Anyones horse had a reaction to bee pollen??

I had my horse on a product for head shaking which contains bee pollen. I used it not because he head shakes but because he has a pollen allergy and thought it might help as weather is so dry. I spoke to the company and they recommended using this. After two weeks he was very lethagic and after feeding would stand in the field flicking his head as if a fly had flown up his nose!!! Had vet and did bloods to make sure wasn't a virus-came back normal. I decided that the supplement was only thing that had changed and stopped feeding. After a day or two is back to normal!! The product has bee pollen in it and have spoken to company but they insist this is very unlikley to caused any allergic reaction. I have googled bee pollen side effects and it suggests that you can have a reaction.
 
Blimey it must take that company ages to collect pollen from the bums of bees! how dedicated it that? Pollen is from flowers not Bees, are they taking the michael?
 
It is a food supplement containing pollen collected by worker bees with honey and nectar added. It is used to help people with hayfever, allergies etc.
 
Okay, if your horse or a person is sensitive to pollen giving more pollen obviously won't help in many cases. This works on the theory that if you are exposed to pollen (or any allergen) then you will become desensitised but you could equally become more sensitive. The desensitivity to an allergen is said to take many months and the quantities administered are very important. If you see a reaction you are giving too much. The body needs time to accept increasing amounts without reaction. This treatment is not really proven either. If it was there would be no children with allergic asthma or hay fever sufferers. Have you tried a filter mask?
 
No he is not that bad. The product is geared to allergic horses and I understand why it is one of the ingredients. I just wondered if anyone had tried bee pollen or local honey and had a reaction? The company are quite definate that it can't be the bee pollen.

I also gave him the correct dose and could of given more if I wanted to.

My horse reacts to Buttercup pollen...came out in tiny blisters on his muzzle and around his eyes (he's cremello/perlino) , The fields where he grazed had lots of buttercups so I moved him to a different yard. I now use a flymask/nosenet if any buttercups appear, thankfully they are not prevalent on my current yard.
