I posted earlier that my 8 yrs old TB has been diagnosed with OCD in both stifles and I thought it was the end of the world.
However he has obviously had it for many years and coped well or rather compensated well .He slipped in his stable which made him lame and after nerve blocks and Xrays at the rear end we received the diagnosis of OCD with the lesion on the nearside being more severe. To date some 6 weeks after his slip and with magnet treatment and hylauronic acid he appears back to his old self and galloping around the fields.
I spoke to the wonderfull lady at Indian equine herbs who has sent me some herbs (anti inlflammatory etc ) to start him on .I feel that I may even try & get on board as he will def let me know if he is in pain. Has anyone else had a similiar situation ? and continued with riding. I know there can be some sad ends but had hoped I might hear of some good ones to cheer me up.

My horse has ocd, and its a bugger when he stops at each puddle to wash his hooves!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not really, he has it in his fetlock and i still ride, just have to keep an eye on if he is getting stiff and needs some more treatment.... there is light at the end of the tunnell, but no cure.

hope this helps but when we get dogs in with OCD, we tell owners to keep exercise constant. So dont take them for 15 mile walk one day then 1/2 mile the next. We also tell people to just use their common sense really. So with dogs, we would also say dont throw balls for them cos usually dogs will twist and turn when chasing them and that can cause pain. If you can relate that kind of advice to a horse! So try to keep his exercise fairly gentle and constant. If you go for a really long hack or do more than normal, he will prob feel it the next day and be sore. It is best to keep riding cos otherwise he would prob get stiff. As merlinsquest says, there is no cure but there are products available to help slow down the bone growth and deterioration of the joint. I should ask your vet for the best products cos there are some crap ones!!

I know of several high ranking dressage horses that have OCD. Okay, so its probably not the severe but still ...

I'm sure that there are loads of horses out there with OCD to a cetain extent - whether their owners know about it or not!
