Long story short.... Horse came in hopping lame, xrays, mri later has been diagnosed with deep bruising on pedal bone.

treatment - 3 months box / small turnout pen rest, Vet and farrier also agreed on gel under front shoes (whilst on rest phase) Reasses in 3 months.

We are half way through , no hopping or heat but he's only walking to and from his stable to pen.

anyone been through same? and what was outcome ?

Just to add - he's got thick soles, and only he will ever know how it happened but we think playing in field, up on back legs and crashed down hard on rock or flint.

thanks

Yes but mine's due to toxic laminitis and the pedal bone dropping, all four feet are showing a deep red bruise. It happened eleven weeks ago and he's on his second set of Imprint shoes and is in by day, out by night with a muzzle on. He has been seen to trot and canter briefly whilst turned out and with no evident pain. Farrier thinks he will have normal shoes in five weeks, maybe. I am thinking that I have to patient and allow nature to take its course.

Hi
We had a horse that stood on a stone out hacking - vets thought he had fractured his pedal bone! MRI showed very deep bruising - heart bar shoes 10 weeks box rest 4 weeks in a small paddock and rescanned completely clear. Back into work and hasn't been lame since :)

thanks Jelly Shark!
Did you re- MRI ? and did your original MRI pick up anything else? - I knew ours would through up a lot of wear and tear.

Can this only be diagnosed through MRI? my sisters horse is very lame at the mo we are waiting on vets apt later in week and hoping MRI isn't necessary

Think so,
the process is nerve blocks (to work out which area) then xrays - (which didnt show anything) then MRI.

Yes, bruising was caused by a long standing abscess, which once it was lanced, improved lameness, but still mildly lame remained. MRI diagnosed pedal bone bruise. Clinic dramatically cut away the whole quarter of the foot, right down to the corium of the bone, leaving the toe and the heel for the horse to walk on. I was shocked, but the horse was instantly sound and has remained so. Apparently it needed zero pressure for a while in order to heal. Never seen this before, horse has amazingly strong bare feet, and has recovered a new foot in 4 months. Been ridden in padded hoof boot whilst recovering, but nevertheless sound ever since operation. Amazing.

I bought a lovely TB ex eventer who went hopping lame after a days hunting. He had a dropped pedal bone which the vet thought was a result of laminitis. He had badly bruised the pedal bone and it took several months of remedial shoeing to get him properly sound but he did go on to event again.
