so i ride on country lanes where it is national speed limit with blind corners and only enough room for 1 car! people often go in excess of 60mph down there but once your off that road its mostly off road hacking and if you choose to do road work there are some busy and some quiet roads to hack on

we almost hit a rider and their horse the other day at dusk on her dark bay horse and she was wearing black with one of the grey reflective v shape things and we just didnt see her until she moved over a bit and yes we did have head lights on

this s also the case with people who are just wearing a tabard so i have started kiting out taz with all sorts of reflective things :)

he currently has a

reflective exercise sheet
reflective bridle parts
reflective leg wraps
3 red lights on his bum
and 2 white lights on his breast plate

i am planning on getting a reflective martingale and some more bridle bits

i also where a big yellow florescent hoody :)

i got quite a few comments today while hacking saying how nice it was to be able to see a horse for once and that they could see me from a mile away :) he has 3 of his lights flashing and 2 that are static but i was wondering if there was anything else that i could possibly add :)

i was going to get the reflective chaps but they are quite expensive unless i can find any cheap ones but none of the tack shops sell them under £50 around here and i couldnt find any stirrup lights :(

i hate to say it as you look v colour co-ordinated at the mo.... but a mixture of colours may help too - i wear a rockfish riders reflex 360 jacket and a hiugh viz hat band - ned wears a highviz breastplate (yellow) and a equafleece exersise rug (yellow) and i've been told that the pink jacket is far easier to see than the yellow..... just ofood for thought...

i am about to get her one of the high viz hat type things/ear covers....

also you can get bigger breastplates - mine is similar to this but clips on to her d-rings - was from ebay but alas the seller is not about anymore

I have a headlight on his bridle, it serves 2 purposes, we are easier to see and it light up where he's looking.

we did have a head light but all it did was light up his ears and forelock so i stopped using it :o

how did you make yours or where did you buy it from? :)

A hat cover is VERY effective. One friend started out late from the stables and was trotting to catch me up; it was a foggy day and she had a yellow hat cover and we could see her from a long, long way.

i was gonna get my jacket in orange but i decided not to as i wanted everything to match too! stoopid me! i thought pink was harder to see in the dark and orange and yellow are the best? hmmm i was going to get the wider style martingale by equisafety as they are wider but i have never seen them before and taz wont allow ear covers unfortunately he just shakes his head constantly :o

Ditto the hat cover. I have a yellow one with a reflective strip.

I also have a reflective tabbard with a battery pack and red flashing lights you can turn on and off which I wear over a flourescent coat / jacket.

What lights are you using on the breastplate and on his exercise sheet?

i will get hold of a hat band then or hat cover :) and i have seen them but my friend has one and it isnt that good not very bright :(

and i have on the front - 1 bicycle light that clips over with 3 bright leds in from halfords

1 led light that is also for a bike but im not entially sure how they would stay on a bike tbh :S

on the back on either side i have double led lights for a bike and then in the middle i have one of the jml bicycle lights which is really bright :)

all have said on the packet that they can be seen from over 400metres away but god knows if you actually can or not

That's a lots of reflexive gear!!! The more the better!

I love your exercise sheet at the minute I only have leg wraps and tabard but will be getting more unlike...

A young rider riding in he dark at 5 with a small child on Shetland in tow with NO high viz and they were trotting up the rode couldn't see them till they were almost right next to us dad had To slam
the brakes on! I was shocked to be honest !

not read all the post yet so not sure whats been said but try ebay they had a good motor bikers fluro jacket on that looked good and cheapy hat bands. Also if you can sew you can get ribbon with reflective stripes in different colours so you could always buy cheapy jods and attack them with that, or hoodies or anything really you could get stick on bike reflectors as well to get creative with. I made a high viz browband with reflective ribbon and bike reflectors on the sides.
If he shakes his head with ear covers then you can get one without like a wee hat but I can't for the life of me remember where from it was on an earlier thread.

its a luna rider one :) andd no one wears hi-vis around here but i have noticed that since me and the other lady on the yard have been riding out like a lit up christmas tree we have seen more tabards and reflective stuff :) i do get some funny and dirty looks from other riders but then me and my horse are going to be seen :)

I wear these overtrousers for hacking in the evenings. As a bonus they are really warm on windy evenings worn over jeans and easy to get on over your boots. http://www.robinsonsequestrian.com/riding-apparel-1/safety/hi-viz-trousers.html

I also flashing arm and leg bands - the equisafety ones are made out of fluorescent/reflective material or pedalite do one that recharges (I have both). Equisafety do a grippy hatband that flashes that might stay on. Also anything polite is always good :)

I was thinking about getting flashing leg bands for pony - I think the equisafety ones would stay on her fine if we were just doing roadwork but we always go up a really brambley track when we go out after dark so I reckon I'd lose them. If you just do roadwork it might be worth a try for you though!

i will have to look at those do they stay on the shiney plasticy type hats though as thats all i have now :(

some have rubber grips on the inside which should grip onto most materials. we have cycle lights on clips that we attach to the hat band to add lights up higher.

how are the red lights attached??

also not the right time of year for deals but i purchased loads of flashing bands from sports direct last year and come spring they were reduced to £1 each we have about 10 each for front/back, left/right

i adapted my rug by putting holes in the tail flap and sewing them back, i was a bit scared of doing it at first because its a £35 rug but i can take them off in the spring etc as they are just clipped on through the holes and i shook the rug to make sure they wouldnt fall off and they appear to stay put :)

Get the Equisafety Polite tabard and blue-silver chequered hatband, wear with black jods and boots. Then the drivers will think you're a mounted policeman and they'll slow right down for you.
