Think I've posted before about loan horse's feet. They aren't brilliant in that they don't grow very much at all and are a bit crumbly and rubbish at the bottom at the moment.
However, taking them off is not an option. He is on loan to go hunting and is 20 years old. We do not have time for a barefoot transition!! He does wear through them quite quickly if we are doing a lot of road work and hinds need doing more often than fronts. He went 5 weeks twice since he has come to me but we've done a lot of roadwork out hunting over the last 2 weeks and so is having his hinds done at 3 weeks next Fri.
So I need to do all I can apart from taking shoes off to keep them in good order (or even get them there in the meantime).
He stood on a hind shoe with his other foot last week and pulled some foot off the outside which looks quite rubbish but am hoping its mainly superficial.
He is fed A&P Calm & Condition, oats and micronised linseed with Pro Hoof (which he's been on since he arrived 2 1/2 months ago). He is out on ok grazing 12 hours a day and in at night with haylage as he can't eat hay due to cough even if it is steamed and soaked.
Should I be helping him with any topical applications such as something to disinfect nail holes? I use Kevin Bacon liquid dressing as a hoof oil when he goes hunting and maybe once or twice more during the week.
Is there anything else at all I can do feed wise to help his feet grow?
Any help would be much appreciated.
