Appaloosa colour help

Hi - not sure how to insert a picture so will have to rely on description. I have 2 appaloosa ponies, one is white bodied with big brown and black spots all over and I think this is called leopard spot. The other is what I would call a red roan with chestnut spots only on his rear. In winter his coat becomes more red and the spots are harder to see but in his lighter summer coat they are very clear. Is there a name for these markings? We also noticed that when his summer coat came in the spots stayed hairy for ages and he had little chestnut tufts all over his rear half!!!

Sounds like 'varnish' pattern

Cheers for this gingercat. The very first picture next to varnish looked so like him and the mare with foal had his colouring too. These are the first appaloosas I have came into contact with ( even after spending years working in a riding school ) and would love to more about them - that link you gave is a great start.
