Mum is Appaloosa, supposedly a snowflake BUT when I compare her to pictures of the different types of colouring she looks like a Varnish to me

, her dad was a few spot though.

I am sooooooo completely confused by Appaloosa genetics atm, because i've never had to look at them before.

Thanks he is real cute and very friendly, I won't be disappointed if he is roan but I think he could pass as a snowcap if compared to the pics in my book so I thought i'd throw it open to discussion to see if its possible that he could be (probably isn't!)

ooooooooooo i'd be very pleased if he was that, what got me thinking is the blanket bit over his rump is pure white and not roany at all, I have to say its all very confusing though, there are so many types but my understanding of raon is the roan colouring is very even over the whole body except head, mane, tail and lowerlegs and he definitely isn't evenly roan over his whole body the bum is definitely white!

I would say he is strawberry roan but in honesty i have no idea at all about breeding and colours say am probably very wrong!
He is very sweet though and has got a very pretty face.

yeah i thought he looks strawberry roan to!

They can indeed colour out later, there was one at the northern appaloosa show that was twelve before it got spots. Our younger one is from very spotty parents, but only has a very few spots and soe varnish marks. Yours looks lovely and they are very bright creatures

we breed Appaloosa's and the general concensus when I showed your pic was that It will be strawberry roan in front with a spotty bum - though these might not appear till 3/4 yrs. We had a similar looking roan foal that has changed beyond all recognition each year, had no spots last year at 3, now they have appeared at 4!

Yes, I would think so. It looks like it will have a nice blanket and if it doesn't spot out...then you may come back on here in 3 years time and call me a liar!!

PMSL.....

I have named him Spotless anyway, so if he does spot out his name will just have to be ironic

he is very sweet! I i ride an appy that looks strawberry roan like that but he has a few spts on his bum. appaloosas usually jave spotty skin cos when we hose ours down we can see his spotty skin. so that would be a way of telling if he will get spots.

also im sure you already know, most appaloosas have striped hooves and white sclera around the eyes.

Hiah - Having spoken to my friend who knows an AWFUL lot about spotty genetics she has confirmed my suspicions that this is in fact a chestnut snowcap. No roan involved and she won't get any more spots on the rump like blanket spots do.

You'll probably find the snowcap will extend to some degree as she gets older

Lovely foal!

My first thought was a snowcap but I thought i wouldn't be that lucky! lol!
I like to confuse things! Mum was Snowflake/Varnish (can't make up my mind there either but she got spotty skin, white sclera, striped hooves the works!) and dad was non appy.
I have notice the foal has some striping to his hooves, not as much as mum, but he hasn't got her measles (lol) and wouldn't say he had white sclera either!
Confused! i am

I have advertised him as Chestnut roan, with blanket, may spot out (just to cover all bases!)

Ahhhh he is gorgeous! Can't comment on what kind of colouring he is... but I have a few spottie! He is white with pink skin.

They are very funny animals, bags of character, massive (and sometimes a bit random) sense of humour. Mine loves hacking, says dressage is boring, but loves to jump - not TOO high though - too much like hard work. They're great family horses, mine is ridden by my husband and a few friends and he LOVES pets: cats, dogs, all other animals. Appies rock. Just don't get them in a fluster...oohhh...
