Hi Everyone,

My partner has decided that he would like to buy a Appaloosa horse, would prefer a gelding but anything considered, between 15-16 hands nearer to 15h the better really, between 4 and 15 be fab.
We are in Lancashire - but have transport and can/will travel, all we ask is that they can hack alone and in company and be suitable for a good rider but by no means mega experienced.
Does anyone know anything suitable? budget up to 3000

All help appreciated

Thanks

There is a breeder of Appaloosa's a couple of miles from me.
Not sure if she has anything of that age for sale though.

Thanks thats excellent

He would like a Leopard Spot but he prefers the ones with brown spots rather than blavk if that makes sense?

He has a very clear picture in his mind - whether we can find that is another thing

Flipping Heck, he's not fussy is he

I'll PM you if I can find Ruth's details.

Good luck in your search.

Thanks Quirky,

Just a word of caution, if he is not used to keeping horses an Appy may not be the best to practice on

They need firm but quiet handling and if they think they are in charge then you get trouble!
I am on the second Appy mare and would be hard pushed to have any other type of horse, but they need experienced handling and riding IMO, and you need to make sure that they have been brought up to have good manners, 'cos a rude one is a terror

My first pony was an appiano and he was absolutely awesome.
He did eveything I asked of him and really enjoyed life but he did have a wicked streak.

After 11 years at one yard, I moved to a different part of the country. I moved on the Saturday and he followed me on the Wednesday, moved by professional transporters.
His parting shot was to tow the head girl across the yard towards the horsebox, he loved travelling

. When he got there, he did a sharp left and took her skiing through the mud. She was determined to keep hold

He did go on when everybody could manage to contain their laughs

and compose themselves enough to load him.

Such happy memories of that pony

Hi,
Small world. I think this is the foal out of my mare. (had foal before I bought her) looks like it and by the same stallion. If it is she is the most genuine and lovely horse ever! Please someone buy him.

Hi Yorksg,

We have had this discussion over and over and thought long and hard

i have had many ex racers which i have re trained so i am used to that sort of horse - the horse will probably end up being shared between us and with me being an experieced rider and him being less so hopefully should meet in the middle.

His mum had appys all her life until she had to give up due to ill health so we have a good support unit around us, we should be ok, but all the necessary checks will be carried out.

comments noted and appreciated though

Ah well versed in the ways of the Appy then

The only other thing I would say is that our first one was very much a one person horse, was bought to share with sister, but when we got a second mare to share the Appy decided that I was hers and that was that!

Hmmmm. Bit dodgy to choose a horse by its hair colour! Would he choose a wife/partner the same way? There's more - much more - to it than that! I'm not convinced he's ready for horse ownership tbh.

Hi Box of Frogs,

Understand your thoughts but it is not just the colour he is after, the horse needs to be right for what we require. We will not choose a horse based just on the colour, i wont let him do it

As mentioned above i have had loads of ex racers and so he and i understand the type of horse that he needs and should have.

He just would like a spotty one because his mum had them all her life and as a kid he grew up around this type/colour of horse, he does understand all thats involved as he was mucking out and turning out etc etc from being 12 years old and he has helped me with vets visits for mine including vaccinations/dentis visits etc.

Plus i only sold my last racer late last year which he was heavily involved with and who was a nightmare during the re training - i was so impressed with how he handled him firm but fair, which is one of the resons why i think he is ready now

just because the horse is the colour he is looking for does not mean by any means we will buy! my initial post probably made it sound as though this was the only criteria it is not i promise

i have my serious & sensible hat on believe me on this one i will not allow him or would recommend that ony one else choose a horse purely based on one thing

I've got a leopard spot for sale... but we're looking for a bit more for him, could you stretch to a slightly higher budget?

Hi Starzaan,

it would depend how much we'd need to stretch too and what he was like we have to factor in vettings and the usual stuff - is he good to hack alone and in co all the usual things

PM me with the info if you like
