Random question, my appy has got the terrible mane, tail & forelock, and really doesn't grow, in fact I've had her 3 years and its the same length/thickness as when I bought her!

My farrier said ther renowned for having bad hair/regrowth - does anyone elses appy have this problem?!

And can any1 reccommend anything to encourage hair growth?? I currently using tailgator megatex!!

Thanks

It seems to be a breed thing. I've for an appy pony and she looks like she's got sweetitch, she has so little mane. It's thin and wispy and so short it stands up on end.

Tail's not much better. The top's a reasonable thickness but rest looks like the foal's been at it (which it hasn't - that would be an amazing acheivement since he's three fields away

)

HOWEVER, she looks like she's growing a decent winter coat, thankfully. This is her first winter with us so I didn't know if she would.

They are renowned for having thin manes and tails....try not to brush it too much I only brush my horses manes and tails if they are going to a show and with liberal amounts of conditioning spray...I do have a part bred appaloosa with the opposite problem her mane and tail is far too thick and is a nightmare to plait or do anything with!

my friends old appy looked like a wee polo pony no mane at all so she just cut the pathetic whisps off and her tail was practically non existent.
My appys dad has very little mane ortail but his mum has a full mane and tail they are both appaloosas and thankfully V has taken after his mother.

Maybe we should make a 'My appys got no hair clique!' lol!

Her coats fine, in fact in winter she's like a big wooly bear and needs to be clipped!! I don't brush it that much, but same as you SallyE I put heaps of conditioning spray on!!

Marshmallow - I am jealous that ur appy has mane & tail!!

We have an appy that comes for the winter that has very little mane, whispy and about an inch long. Her tail is like a foals, very short.

But my friend has an appy x ID, he is blanket spotted. He has a beauiful tail, it is lovely and thick. His mane is nice but wild and doesn't lie properly.

Don't go getting extensions! It is part of the breed, mind you the current Appy has a not bad mane and tail, awful silly forelock though, with bushy underhair:) The old Appy had a dreadful mane and tail, they did get better as she got older, although the mane was never good. Try feeding wheatgerm, it helps with hair growth. There is very little problem with the coat, and they often have a sort of double coat, which makes them very waterproof and good in cold weather. The current Appy has a bit too much arab for that, but the old girl had an amazing coat

Thought Appy's were supposed to have little mane & tail? Something to do with the fact that a long thick mane & tail would be more easily snagged and ripped out on bushes and stuff? O.o (or I could just be talking nonsense xD) remembering that they were often ridden by cowboys...

"A short mane and tail was bred into the horses so that they could not easily be caught in brush." apparently? xD

They were originally bred by the Nez Perce (sp) Native Americans in the Appalation Mountains. There is a story that when the tribe were threatened by the white settlers that they put their children on the horses and sent them towards cCanada, they almost made it too. Anyone who is interested should visit the BAPS website, loads of interesting stuff on there

Even more jealous now iv seen a piccy (gorgeous btw)! My mares is just plaitable, but I try not to plait as it just pulls it out more! Its fine cuz she's destined for SJ - so no plaiting needed

She has got an awesome coat tho, can go all winter without a rug!

I guess the spots make up for the lack of mane! lol!

Btw YorksG - love your 'I am owned by a mare with appytude'

It is so true

was owned by the old girl for 25 years (about), been owned by this one for 4 years, and although she hasn't many spots on the outside, she has the full attitude, so I assume that she is very spotty on the inside

i wouldnt put too much mane and tail spray in can make it more brittle! i would carfully trim end of tail each month to take off split ends and the same with mane, just snip the split ends on each hair just above the split. i think its a color/breed thing!

Love it! My mare also has a lot of 'appytude'! Officially my favouritest word now
laugh.gif

Think if I cut off the split ends I'll end up with nothing! lol! Ah well, its all good, at least I don't have to pull it!
