... when I tried to explain to her that she needed to buy a decent 4x4 with which to tow a trailer (I went into detail about weight/engine size/new legislation etc) - I even told her about a really good 2nd hand one that was for sale. So she has bought a 2 door SWB Rav4 (which is already throwing out big puffs of black smoke when she drives it):rolleyes::confused:

What shall I say next time? :D;)

Oh dear! You can give someone advice they ask for but you can't make them listen!
The mind boggles at what some people are happy to tow their pride and joy with.

Maybe she will get pulled over and taken to a weigh bridge (quite common these days) then you can say.................told you so. I hate Ravs to me they are a pointless vehicle neither a car nor a 4 x 4 really a bit of a dolly bird vehicle.

Being on the border in an area with a lot of dodgy people :D not a week goes by without a police road check in our village, so it won't be long ...

I hope no harm comes to her horse before then though :(

Bought a Rav to tow with...seriously???

Even if you don't know all the in's and out's of like you said weight/engine size/towing legislation etc, anyone with a shred of common sense wouldn't consider buying one of those to pull a horse trailer with.

Mind you although slightly different subject , I've seen the Lada 4x4 pull a horse trailer (complete with pony in the back) out of very wet muddy field at a show, all these people with their Disco's/RR's and other 'proper 4x4's' that where getting stuck and having to be pulled out by the tractors were a little stumped and red faced to say the least :D

I think a lot of these little 4X4 are useless. Maybe your person just thought all 4x4s were the same, or maybe it was all she could afford, not everyone has endless money and some of the big 4x4s are very expensive to run.

However there are some that are good. I had a Shogun Pinin, the small version of the Shogun and it was an amazing little off roader, it had 2, 4 and all wheel drive and was excellent for when I did jump judging on the XC course. I never tried towing with it but it was supposed to be able to tow well. We now have a Land Rover Disco. It is excellent but eats diesel! It takes £100 + to fill and that lasts at most a week.

No educating pork!

There's a wealth of knowledge and help on the net, so towing with something shite because you are trying to save money well - you only have yourself to blame when it goes tits up and lets hope it doesn't mean your horse is in danger too.

Some things you can scrimp on - ie tins of beans - things like that - you can't!! :)

I don't think it necessarily costs alot to get a safe tow vehicle - something like a dihatsu 4-track or old izuzu trooper are just ace, and rather importantly, safe!
There is no money saving on earth to make it worth risking your horses life and also those of other road users by towing with an unsafe vehicle - it is just madness (and a pet peeve, ahem, sorry!).

No, she's not short of money, but even if she was, buying a vehicle like this is a false economy anyway - she's going to end up having to sell it and get something better to tow with. She actually said to me that she didn't think she would be able to manage a "big" 4x4 - so how she will cope with a trailer on the back is anyone's guess :(

The way a lot of folk think makes you wonder, The ones that have to have something new or trendy instead of practical and up to the job!!! or the ones that still think a 4x4 and trailer is the cheap option... anyway let them get on with it like you say hopefully no one will get hurt..

That sounds very dangerous. We have the 5 door version and although it is OK as a compromise between a town car and a 4x4 (we can stick the dogs in there, hay, carry building supplies etc) the most it can tow is a 500kg tiny trailer not a horse trailer with a horse in it! She's going to get herself in a serious accident.
