I recently posted a post of my new horse Bailey on here and got a PM from somebody who said that he looked like an Appiano, as I was confused by his colouring.

I've been trying to look into it but there doesn't seem to be much, if any, information about the colour. All I know is that it is a horse with coloured characteristics and appy?

Unfortunately he doesn't have a dam or sire registered on his passport - I am absolutely gutted.

Quite unflattering pictures.. was just taking them to compare his weight but this was straight after a quick bath so his roaning has come out even more than in my other pictures.

Sounds expensive, lol!

I think they're the same.. just the US way of saying it, although I don't know for certain, just something I read.

You can clearly see that he is a skewbald roan and white from the white patch on his shoulder though can't you?

I think its so fascinating!

BAPPS does not allow patched spotted on the register (or they didn;t) Also having seen a couple like this he will probably fade and loose his colour as he ages.

We also inherited an Appiano Register, and have created a pintaloosa register for these animals; this is another Supplementary Appendix, these animals are not registered as British Spotted Ponies. Any skewbald or piebald/ spotted crosses will be on this register even if they do not exhibit pintaloosa characteristics.

This is taken from the BSPS website. It might be worth speaking to them about his colourings. It's a few years since I've had any dealings with them but they were very helpful when I spoke to them.

Pffft you dare ;)

I think we've figured out he's definately an Appiano - its hard without knowing his dam or sire but I'm sure I can see skewbald roan and white patches like a coloured.

My partners mum has one, she wanted a coloured & picked him up at our local auction as a 5 month old foal, he was bay & white when she bought him but slowly over the last couple of years he has changed colour! Not quite as pale as yours yet, but hes slowly getting there! When he was a baby the only clue we had that there was any appy in him was his eyes & his nose, apart from that he looked just like a coloured, this pic was taken this winter, in the summer he goes ALOT lighter. And yes i know she hasnt got a hat on, its my daughters friend & it was just a spur of the moment thing sitting on him.

Navaho, not Appy, as they have clean legs, not featherd. There is a lot of confusion about Appy's, with people assuming any spotted horse is an Appy, they are a breed with breed standards set out by the societies, well worth a look at.

Im confused then lol, but it doesnt take much, i realise that Appys havnt got hairy legs, ive a friend that used to have one. I just assumed Appiano/Pintalloosa were coloureds x appys.....hmmm im guessing im wrong on that one then? Oh well you learn something new every day :) So what would an appy x coloured be classed as then as regards colouring...Hector is is exactly the same as HorseSpirits horse in colouring..well in the summer he is, hes loads lighter...but obviously ALOT more hairy (though thats all coming off shortly when i get the clippers on him lol!)

It would be an Appyx If one of it's parents was an Appy :) They closed the register to none known parentage at one time, but have now re-opened the part-bred register, as long as the animal fulfils all the criteria for being an Appy (coloured skin, striped hooves, clean legs, over 14.2 etc)

hey there!

My 14.2hh pony, Freckles was bought buy us knowing she was an appaloosa x cob but it turns out she a registered spotted pony/horse which is a breed and shes appiano too, she is the double of bailey! its actually!! :) heres a picture of her!

Appiano: appiano as far as we know is a colour, usually spotted horses/ponies display it!

hopes this helps.
