Apple Juice and Honey in feed?!

Hey all,

Random conversation with my friend today who said they used to put apple juice and honey in their horses feed, as well as water to dampen the chaff etc.

It sounds so yummy!!..for a horse..I might put a little bit in Eric's feed although he loves it as it is.

Does anyone else do this/heard of it?
Although I cannot think of many nutritional benefits..is there any?

Don't give ours honey but do splodge apple juice in sometimes - usually when they have wormers in their feed! Ours have cider vinegar every day in their feeds.

The apple juice is good for disguising wormers and anything else the horse doesn't particularly like in their feed.
 
I just posted re fruit and veg!

My horse loves fruit juices, in a desperate attempt to get some bute in to him i mixed it with apple juice and syringed it into his mouth. Seemed to work!
 
I know people use Apple Juice if they are trying to encourage horse to eat food...either as a disguise or making it more palatable...never heard of Honey tho.
My mare can tell something has been added from absolutely miles away!!!
 

One of my broodmares doesnt like to drink when we are away at shows - so I put either apple juice or peppermint cordial in her water - works every time

I used to feed honey to one of my horses, he had COPD and weezed quite badly in dry summer air - worked wonders! (along with a dust free environment)
 
I have been told (a few years ago now) that local honey can help some horses who suffer from headshaking? Don't know if it works or not.......
 
I gave my horse honey last year to try to help his head shaking as some say it works along homeopathic lines of giving them a small dose of the pollen they are immune to. It has to be local honey though and I have to say that I couldn't tell whether it had any positive effect, but he liked it and the vet said no harm in trying!
